Andre Berto stopped Carlos Quintana in the eighth round Saturday night to retain his WBC welterweight championship at the BankAtlantic Center.
Berto (26-0) did heavy damage from the third round through the eighth. He finally felled Quintana, a former WBO champion, with a succession of hard rights before referee Tommy Kimmons stopped the bout at the 2:16 mark.
Quintana (27-3) had Berto looking tentative in the first two rounds.
But Berto came alive in the third round and began landing combinations for the duration of the fight. He had Quintana against the ropes in the third round. In the fifth round, he rocked Quintana again, this time with a straight right.
Berto landed a couple big rights in the sixth and seventh rounds. ...Read on for more...

A rift has emerged between Bernard Hopkins and Gold Boy Promotions. It stems from comments made by Richard Schaeffer after Hopkins fight with Roy Jones, when he suggested Hopkins contemplate retirement and said, "could be something which, as a friend, I might advise him to consider. I think it's time for his friends and family to have a serious talk with him."
To which Hopkins replied to ESPN, "Maybe the money's not being made off me like it's being made off somebody else. If that's the problem, then fine" ...read on for more.

Mexico's Daniel Ponce De Leon (38-2, 32 KOs), an ex-junior featherweight titlist, faces Mayweather protégé Cornelius Lock (19-4-1, 12 KOs) in a featherweight bout. Ponce De Leon has won four in a row, including a third-round knockout of Orlando Cruz in February, since Juan Manuel Lopez stopped him in the first round and relieved him of his 122-pound title in June 2008. Lock also knocked out Cruz in his last fight, stopping him in the fifth round on the Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez undercard in September. The co-feature between welterweight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Jose Cotto, brother of Miguel Cotto, has also been agreed to but Golden Boy is waiting for Cotto's signed contract.

For Sugar Shane Mosley, his May 1 mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather cannot come soon enough. Having longed for this fight for many years, he is mentally and physically ready for battle, with training preparations well underway. Following a three-city media tour which wrapped up in Los Angeles on March 4, Mosley immediately returned to Big Bear, Calif., where he owns a home and has trained since 1996. In the serene mountain environment, Mosley is relaxed, but working extremely hard in preparation for what he knows will be one of the toughest battles of his career. The fact that Mayweather steps into the ring with a record of 40-0 is not intimidating to the former pound-for-pound champ who is ready to take back his throne.
"I was 38-0 with 35 knockouts when I stepped into the ring and lost for the very first time," said Mosley. Read on for more...

WBA heavyweight champion David Haye on Monday ruled out defending his title against veteran Bernard Hopkins, a boxing great he said is one of his idols.
Two days after stopping John Ruiz in nine rounds, Haye is trying to line up a unification fight against one of the Klitschko brothers, Vitali or Wladimir, who hold the other heavyweight belts, and said he may have to meet former champion Nikolai Valuev in a rematch of last year’s title contest.
But he said a fight with the 45-year-old Hopkins...read on for more...

VEGAS (AP)—Bernard Hopkins collapsed to his knees in his dressing room, drained from a brutal fight and exhausted by the end of his 17-year wait for revenge against Roy Jones Jr.
Two of their generation’s greatest boxers just might have ended their careers together in a Las Vegas hospital Saturday night, but only Hopkins earned the right to leave with a victory.
Hopkins won a grueling unanimous decision in his long-delayed rematch with Jones, emphatically avenging his loss in the famed champions’ first bout in 1993.
Although both fighters often appeared to be shadows of their former selves, the 45-year-old Hopkins

Britain's David Haye defended his WBA heavyweight crown with a ninth-round stoppage of an obdurate and courageous John Ruiz in Manchester.
Haye floored Ruiz just 25 seconds into the encounter, but the American challenger showed tremendous bravery and powers of recovery to survive.
For a moment it looked as if Ruiz was working his way back into the fight.
But the badly-marked 38-year-old was down in the fifth and again

1. A pretty good set of fights on both Showtime and HBO this weekend. Andre Dirrell fought in his home state where Arthur Abraham looked like a fish out of water. His cut above the eye called for two doctors take a look in the middle of the round. For one, the referee should have waited for a true lull in the action. Abraham seemed to have been buzzed just before. Secondly, the two doctors took way too much time playing cutman in the corner. Just look at the cut and determine if he can continue.
2. There was one instance where Andre Dirrell took a flush right hand by Abraham and hit the canvas. It was ruled a slip but should have been ruled a knockdown. The punch seemed to have caused the knockdown rather than any tangled feet.
3. Seeing Andre get hit while he was down was reminiscent of Roy Jones DQ some
