Kelly Pavlik was already the hardworking hero of
people from the rust belt, the humble champion who stayed true to his roots.
Now folks are calling the young man from Youngstown, Ohio, the next great
middleweight, and his fan base is ever expanding.
“I want to be great,” he’s said more than once, “but I think there’s
still work to do.”

Sergio Mora no longer is “The Contender" and no one can call him the "Latin Fake". He’s now a champion - something only a handful of Liverpuncher members were able to predict.
One of those members, mrodrig4, dug deep in his prediction ability and said, "Something tells me...Forrest's age catches up with him. Forrest turns in a poor performance
as he did aganist Ike Quartey. I'm going against the grain here, Mora
via split decision!" Which sums up the story of the fight.

Pound for pound King Floyd Mayweather Jr. sent a press release earlier today stating that he would retire. He sent this even though he would make millions fighting Oscar de La Hoya. Is it a ploy to get more money out of the proposed De La Hoya fight? Read the letter and decide for yourself.
Dear Media:
It
is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have
decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an
easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a
child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for
me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport. I have said
numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years
that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and
winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing
they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after
many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no
longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness,
which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken
to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision. I am sorry
I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my
God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays
ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a
time when money doesn't matter. I just can't do it anymore. I have
found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time.
Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty
and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that
their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every
fight I ever had. It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now
I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my
life.

Vernon
Forrest doesn’t consider Sergio Mora to be much of a contender.
The WBC
light middleweight champion puts his title on the line Saturday at the Mohegan
Sun Casino in a 12-round bout against the season one winner of “The Contender”
reality TV show.
Forrest
(40-2, 29
KOs) has shown little respect for
Mora, referring to his style as “garbage” and admitted to laughing at him after
sparring with him in the past.

From ESPN The Magazine
by Sam Alipour
The sun is setting on the Golden Boy's boxing career, but he's going
down swinging (and earning). In what may be the busiest year of his
life, Oscar De La Hoya plans to fight two more times this year—a September rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
and a final un-filled bout in December. All this while serving as the
subject of From Puncher to Promoter, a documentary currently being
shopped, and juggling an empire that includes Major League Soccer's
Houston Dynamo (he's a part owner).

When two good fighters have a close fight and are still in the stage of their career where they need exposure, the best option they have is to fight each other again. We saw it with Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, and now we will see it again when Carlos Quintana and Paul Williams meet again in a welterweight title fight televised on Showtime.

According to a report from
the fightnews website WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest went crazy
during a teleconference when upsets by Contender stars Alfonso Gomez and Brian
Vera were mentioned. "I'm no Arturo Gatti nor am I Andy Lee. You've got to
realize who you're dealing with. I'm completely another level....there won't no
upset come next Saturday, so trust me on that one. You can forget about that
sh*t!"
