Andre Ward outclassed Allan Green winning every round and earning a unanimous decision victory in Oakland CA to retain his WBA 168 pound championship. All 3 of the offical judges had the fight 120-108 for Ward. With the win, Ward advances to the semifinals of the Super Six tournament and will face Andre Direll next.
Ward (22-0, 13 knockouts) completely controlled the fight starting off with a good jab to the body. Green found out early that Ward was not an easy target and couldn’t land his infamous left hook. By the third round Ward showed a new wrinkle to his game - fighting on the inside. Ward trapped Green against the ropes and beat Green to the punch each time. Read on to hear why Green said he felt "dead" in the fight...
A similar pace continued through the middle rounds, and by then each time Green walked back to his corner he had the look of a defeated fighter.
Ward continued to dictate the pace of the fight, landing first and throwing multiple combinations. The punches from Green lost a lot of steam by the later rounds and Ward began to load up on big right hands.
This fight was Ward’s first defense of the WBA super middleweight title.
Green (29-2) lost in his first fight since replacing an injured Jermain Taylor in the tournament. He still can advance to the semifinals by winning in the third round against Mikkel Kessler.
At the end of the fight Ward said, “I feel like Kobe, I just got it done. He’s [Green] a hard puncher, he’s skilled, I’m just happy with the victory. He motivated me with the things he said before the fight. Every fight is tough, I don’t care what it looks like. I had to be mentally alert at all times”
Green said, “Andre Ward fought a hell of a fight, but I had 3 traning camps before this fight, I felt sapped. I came down to 166 and by the time I was in the ring I felt dead. I wasn’t fighting at my best and Andre Ward showed me a lot of experienced things in there. Things that I can deal with, but I felt week.”
