Andre Ward
claimed the WBA super middleweight title with an unanimous technical decision
over
Denmark’s
Mikkel Kessler on Saturday.
Ward (21-0,
13
KOs) added his first world championship
belt to his Olympic gold medal with an upset victory in his hometown.
Ward
announced his arrival among the world’s elite boxers with a dominant victory
over Kessler (42-2), the WBA champion for most of the past five years and the
early favorite to win the Super Six super middleweight tournament.
A ringside
physician stopped the fight midway through the 11th round after looking at a
growing cut on Kessler’s face, which was caused by a head butt.
A fight is
decided on the scorecards in a technical decision.
Sweden’s
Mikael Hook favored Ward 97-93, while
South
Africa’s Stanley Christodoulou and
California’s Steve Morrow both scored it
98-92 for Ward. The Associated Press also had it for Ward 97-93.
“Right now,
I’m dreaming,” Ward said after celebrating with his trainer, Virgil Hunter. “I
can’t compare this to winning the gold medal, because it’s going to take a
while for it all to sink in,” Ward said.
“Everyone
said we got the bad draw, but we just beat the toughest guy.”
A crowd
packed the lower bowl of Oracle Arena for
Oakland’s
first world title fight since 1967, and Ward didn’t disappoint.
Ward hasn’t
lost a fight since early in his amateur career more than 10 years ago. He
rolled through the Athens Olympics five years ago, including a quarterfinal
victory over Russian world champion Evgeny Makarenko—the last fight in which he
faced such long odds.
Kessler had
won his past three fights since his only loss to Joe Calzaghe in 2007, briefly
relinquishing the WBA title he has held since 2004. The Dane was the favorite
in the tournament matching six of the world’s top super middleweights, and he
was confident enough to fight stateside for just the second time in his career.
After a
slow start, Ward turned the fight in the fourth round with an uppercut that
rocked the more aggressive Kessler and opened a cut on his face. Ward then took
charge, repeatedly landing combinations and sneaky shots.
Ward was
much busier than Kessler, opening a cut above the Dane’s left eye in the middle
rounds. Kessler’s struggled against the American’s busier style, and he began
backpedaling, with Ward landing enough punches to hurt him repeatedly.
“I felt
like it was my time,” Ward said. “I was not intimidated by Kessler’s record.
“I was
surprised that Kessler didn’t change up at all. He kept doing the same thing
over and over.”
Ward
acknowledged there were two head butts which contributed to Kessler’s injury,
but said they were accidental.
Just got back from the fight. Ward looked amazing and the crowd was really into it. There were quite a few Danish fans at the fight and they got quiet real quick. I asked a few of them what they thought and they acknowledged Ward won the fight. The undercard was weak but overall it was a great show. Props to Kessler for coming stateside for this defense.
Well done Andre Ward,i for one went with Kessler, but andre has proved what a good talent he is and must now be one of the favourites to win the tournament.
U people r actually satisfied with Wards performance? Wards talent is going to waste, he has amazing talent but he fought like a pussy, it looked more like a wrestling match and NFL try out rather than a boxing fight, Ward was constantly tackling and ramming into Kessler and constant holding, he showed in the Miranda fight he can take a punch, but he decided to fight like a pussy, very little combinations and the constant jab/grabbing, 1-2/grabbing was pissing me off, he gave a horrible performance last night, my hat goes off to Kessler who showed why he is called the Viking Warrior, and facing a strong yet cheap opponent (accidental buttheads my ass, theres nothing accidental when ur doing the same shit for 11 rounds), and surprisingly the more hurt Kessler got the better he fought and didnt wanna quit even though he complained about not seeing well, my props to Kessler forward to seeing what he comes with for stage 2.
P.S. Ward showed he cant work under pressure, lets see if Dirrell notices and lets his fast and accurate combinations go on when he fights Ward on stage 2, im going for Dirrell on this tournament.
i was VERY impressed by wards performance. he dominated a world class fighter from pillar to post. i pick ward to win the tournament. i think he can do the same to abraham who also is flat. as Bench just said above, "styles make fights"
I've rarely seen a fighter adjust less than Kessler. A stinky hug-a-thon. Ward did what he had to do to win, good for him. If JT has ANY fight left in him I see no reason to bail out now.
Wow...super six is getting even more interesting! I Picked Ward, but I thought Kessler would have SOME moments of explosiveness. Ward was never really buckled with Kesslers right hand. I agree, Ward is a fav. to win it all.
I believe that Ward had a gameplan against kessler and performed it to perfection. Ward said that he would bring an extra to this fight that would take kessler out of his game. i believe that extra was his head. two headbuts that made a big impact on the fight. I think the fight to watch here is Ward Vs Direll. i think they can both run circles around Abraham. We'll see.
well TommyGunn i never picked a fighter before i saw the fights 1st, after seeing them my tourny pick is Dirrell, i like the talent Ward posseses, but he fights like a pussy, he did the same in the Miranda fight, he took everything Miranda gave him like nothing happened, yet he fought like a pussy, he had Miranda on the edge of a KO, but he sorted to the stupid jab/grab, 1-2/grab John Ruiz tactic instead of just KOing the fuck out of Miranda, Ward should stop pussying out and actually fight cause we all know he can do it, he's starting to become a Foyd style boring fighter.
Floyd style fighters is what gave MMA a chance back in the delahoya vs mayweather so we dont want none of that!! Ward's style isnt going to change he stated that by saying that he's a smart figher that wont get in a brawl cus he's too smart for that. I also like dirrell's style but he did the same with frotch. He had the speed and knew that frotch wouldnt catch him, but he only did enough to win the rounds instead of whooping some Eorupean @ss. He should've won the fight though.
Actualy i picked Kessler in the phantasy league here to win because of experience, ive never sat down to watch kessler fights, all i ever saw before were the ighlights of his fight against Calzaghe and IMO i saw it was a close fight, but i was going for Ward since i knew he had talent, but he's not puting it to good use, and as for Dirrell, well its a different story, Dirrel actually stood his ground and exchanged blows aot of times with Froch, hell he never fought over 10 rounds and in the later rounds even though exhausted he kept on going and even hurt Froch and was gonna beat the crap out of him but the bell rang, Dirrell has better upper body movement than Ward and through much more combinations, and isnt afraid to stand his ground, thats why im going for Dirrell on this tournament.
Well only time will tell for these young talents guys, they say that winning a championship belt improves you 10 or 20 percent? so we'll see how Ward goes, he's got momentum now & confidence so look out Abraham.
