Blog by Swodogg - NFL has it, NBA has it and now even old school MLBaseball has it. What is the deal with boxing always being behind the times?
Instant Replay is used in all the major sports because the last second basketball shot or the homerun ball just going foul is a make or break call for a team. These plays happen so quickly the human eye cannot see the action in real time let alone call it right.
I’m all for using the Marquess of Queensberry rules of 1865 and not making any changes: 3 minute rounds, 1 minute between rounds, no wrestling, no other person in the ring ect…However with the age of technology and high speed cameras its time to look at how the rules are not changed per se but can be made better.
What we saw this weekend was a disgrace. The Cintron fight was yet another example of how instant replay would have helped. He claimed he was hit by a headbutt, but the instant replay clearly showed the punch landed flushly on his chin, causing the knockdown.
Also a cut opened up by a legal blow vs. a cut caused by a clash of heads takes place in almost every other fight and the ruling can have major consequences if ruled incorrectly. The referee is almost never in position to make the correct call. Instead, instant replay used between rounds or during a fight can get the call right.
Yes, I know the difficult part would be having the time to watch the replay. After all, the Marques of Queensberry rules states a 1 minute time limit between rounds. Which by the way was broken this weekend when the referee waited over 3 minutes to start the next round.
I say have an independent ringside referee look at the tape then make sure of the proper ruling while the fight is taking place. That way, if a fight is eventually stopped on cuts, the proper next steps can be made.
Its time boxing gets with the times, use some technology to get it right. Football, Basketball and even Baseball sees the value in getting it right. Boxing has enough black eyes as it is, more blown calls will just make it worse.
word sun! im with you on this! i domt like the way u reffer to America's past time as in "even baseball" tho! im just a baseball fanatic tho!! haha! no beef man just messin'! that extra ref checking shit out would not be bad at all! think about what it would have done to some of last years fights like the Andrade scandal, or the Holt knock out over Torres! it just makes sense to have this, however it would reduce a refferee's power and that makes it questionable!
i agree there should be instant replays in boxing, this way things like Torres/Holt 2 wont happen anymore, everyone clearly say it was a headbutt on that fight and the stupid ref declared it a KO.
