Blog: Andre Dirrell Should be upset at Referee Hector Afu E-mail

Blog by: Javier Reyes bodysnatcher - While watching the Dirrell/Froch fight this past Saturday I was upset with referee Hector Afu. There was plenty of clinching, hitting behind the head, and your occasional body slam. For a second I thought I was watching a Bernard Hopkins fight.

With that said, it became clear to me that Dirrell had far more skill of the two. He was faster, more accurate, better defense - he was simply the better fighter.

I was very upset to see Hector Afu deduct a point in the 10th round…read on for more

but not for the same reasons Dirrell was. Dirrell was upset because he didn’t understand why he was being penalized; I was upset because I could not believe that it took 10 rounds for Afu to finally realize that Dirrell was holding excessively.

For all the talent Dirrell has, he seems to have fear inside the ring which kept him from giving Froch the beating of a life time. As I watched the fight, I kept thinking, if Dirrell just stops clinching and actually fights he will give Froch a good beating. Unfortunately Dirrell’s fear, style, lack of confidence, or whatever you want to call it, kept him from doing just that.

If referee Afu deducted a point in the 4th or 5th round we would probably be talking about how well Dirrell looked beating Froch. However, since the referee waited until the 10th round, we are left talking about how it was a close win for Froch. It seemed that Afu, not Dirrell, or his corner was the only one that could make Dirrell fight to his potential. By taking a point for holding Afu also took away Dirrell’s biggest weakness – his fear. Once Dirrell was forced to fight in the 10th and 11th rounds he was just too much for Froch. So should Dirrell be upset at Hector Afu? Yes he should be.

The Matrix

For the record I had Dirrell edging Froch by a point, but I didn’t feel bad for Dirrell at all because of the way he fought. Andre seems to be a good kid, but as the old saying goes "a tiger can’t change its stripes." I had not seen much of Dirrell coming into the fight, because honestly I didn’t want to see much of him. The first time I saw him was on an HBO Boxing After Dark card and I remembered thinking that it was one of the worst fights I had seen. When I heard he was added to this tournament I figured that maybe he had changed; however when the pressure is on we see a fighter for what he really is and Dirrell is a very talented fighter with a very boring style. Apparently it is true "no one can be told how ugly the Matrix can make a fight, you have to see it for yourself."

Abraham/Taylor

Arthur Abraham is the type of fighter that will make you forget about his performance with a single punch. He had that affect on me in his second fight with Miranda and he almost did it again with his sensational knock out of Jermain Taylor. I say almost, because this time I cannot forget his performance since I know the opposition he will be facing in this tournament. Abraham simply starts too slow. I gave Taylor the first five rounds and before the knock out I was ready to write about how surprised I was at the fact that Abraham was the one that seemed winded in the last round and not Taylor. Against Dirrell in the next round Abraham will have to step it up because unlike Miranda and Taylor, Dirrell’s chin has not been damaged and Abraham cannot afford to lose the first half of the fight and just bank on a late KO.

Random Thoughts:

So apparently after this weekends KO Taylor might drop out of the tournament. Now I’m not one to brag... Ok I am, but if you look at my prediction of this fight and the Marquez/Mayweather fight I’ve done pretty well this past month.

Seriously, can Abraham not buy better trunks?

So apparently there’s talks of Allen Green replacing Taylor in the Super Six. Why? we don’t need another Dirrell. Here’s an idea, why not wait to see the result of Andrade/Bute II and make the winner of the fight the replacement.

Ok so I know nothing about Football, I don’t like it, I don’t watch it and simply don’t care for it. After hearing that the Titans lost 59-0 to the Patriots I’m thinking that there must be several people in the Titans organizations payroll that are a lot like me.

Nikolay Valuev has to be half Sasquatch, that’s the only logical reason I can think of for him to look the way he does.

nice piece homie. i think you are right, Direll needs to Man up a little and go for it. he has all the talent to do so.

about abraham, i am on the same page. sure it as an impressive punch, but it wasn't a very impressive overall performance. i mean the right hand is all this guy has! well trained guys like Hopkins would SKOOL this guy the same way he skooled pavlik.

dont be surprised to see direll outbox abraham.

Agree on that one man. Allan Green? Wait for Bute vs. Andrade winner which will be their "stage 1"

As far as AA looking winded in round 12, I agree BUT I think it was a trap. He tried to have Taylor think he was just chillin' then BAM, he opened up. That was all she wrote.

Good piece man!
I called direll's loss a lack of experience, but i must agree with you'all, it was lack of b@lls. He should've won that fight easy.

We all know how to beat a strong slow fighter like abraham wich by the way he can take a punch too . AA looses vs speed and staying away, by decision, Direll and ward have the abilities but Direll's gotta step it up! Ward in the other hand he's from the goosen stable and they dont rush their fighers like goldenboy does. he should be ok to dance with aa for 12 rnds on a zzzzz... fight. I dont see kessler
beat AA because kessler is easy to hit, he's too much of a straight fighter and got no waist movement.I dont think AA is going to respect kessler power, AA is gona sit back with his pick-A-BOO defense, let him get tired and catch him with one of them power punches in the later rounds.
I also see AA loosing to B-Hop or calzage.

Nicolai VAlue is an actor. He came out on "the goonies" movie he's famous for the phrase: "ROCKY ROAD!"

How about the most feared man to replace Taylor!? P-Will in the tourney! scratch pavlik and go at it!! he's already fit since he's been training for pavlik. I dont think he's too small. With his built he can fight pacquiao at 134 and then fight abraham at 168 lol jk. Freak of nature!

Dirrell:

Nice article homie. Listen I also think Dirrell is better than that It looked like he was scared to get hit. I had the fight a draw because it was an ugly one with all the clinching and stuff. I also think Dirrell was the one holding alot and I have no idea why. He disappointed me with his performance I know he's better than that I just don't know what happen to him that night.

Abraham:

Well Abraham need to pick up the pace early he starts way to slow. I just hope Dirrell can capitilize on that and just break him down. Yes I know that Dirrell looked really bad against Froch but I see him doing better this next fight against Abraham.

If Taylor drops out of the tournament I also think the winner of the Bute/Andrade should replace him.

Final Thoughts:

I actually see Ward winning the tourny with Kessler right behind him.

Great Piece. I feel Direll won the fight as well. Its so funny because I've been defending Dirrell and I havent always been a fan of his either. I ve seen a Dirrell few times and in his fight with Froch he fought pretty good considering his comp. I didnt like the holding as much as the next guy and I believe it turned off the judges too but I honestly watched a fight that Dirrell was controlling predominantly. Dirrell landed cleaner shots, dictated the pace, boxed effectively but I guess you right Body. His fear might of got the best of him. If he matches up with hm again, maybe he'll fight differently.

I realized Saturday that I was pissed off at the decision because I am caught up with the us vs them. America vs them. Im a Ward fan and I'll be pulling for him against Kessler even though that might be difficult

i had the fight 114 - 113 for Froch.. so without the point i would have had it a draw. but i think the point being taken was warranted.. i think the holding especially and running was the reason for the fight being as messy as it was. Froch had no choice but to try to get off when he was close because Dirrell was holding so damn much. and bottom line is that Dirrell needs to man the hell up.. are you a fighter or not? you can control range without running.

people these days seem to look at clinching like it's some kind of srtategy, but it's a foul.. it's an illegal move in boxing.. when you are being fouled time and time again and the ref isn't doing anything about it you tend to get frustrated.. imagine that Froch was having low blows thrown against him time, after time, after time.. no one would have a problem with the point but for clinching which is also a foul people want to argue.. notice that once the clinching stopped the fight suddenly got less sloppy..

i'm going to slightly disagree with you guy about abraham.. abraham is a good boxer.. he does what he needs to do to get the job done.. he can handle anyone in this tournament.. i still think it comes down to Abraham v Kessler for the final.. Taylor actually has a lot of power as a regulator but Dirrell.. not so much... i think Abraham make easy work of Dirrell.

i would love to see Bute in there.. Andrade has a granite chin but is kind of a sh!t boxer... plus Kessler already defeated him with a matador type performance and we want to see match ups we haven't seen already.. what about Jean Pascal? he'd come back down from light heavy for this.. actually all of them are based in montreal.. if you saw Jean Pascal vs Diaconu.. i think you'd vote for Jean Pascal.. that was one of the best fights i've ever witnessed..
