Blog: Give the referee a break E-mail

Blog by Joe Madre (GunRunner) GunRunner - I'm not really a writer but I wanted to share a few thoughts with my fellow boxing fans. I have been a fan of the sport since the early eighties when great champs like Arguello, Sanchez, Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Hagler were commonplace and upcoming fighters like Bramble, Mancini, Boza Edwards, and Biggs were making household names for themselves.

I appreciate a good scrap as much as anyone. But when I think about the long term effects the sport had on Muhammad Ali and Meldrick Taylor and the irreversible damage done to guys like Deuk Koo Kim and Leavander Johnson it makes  me wonder why the commissions aren’t doing enough to protect the fighters.  Read on for more…

Recently I read a post on another forum where someone was appalled that Kevin Johnson was getting his crack at Vitaly Klitschko after Chris Arreola's embarrassing loss. First of all I have say that these guys are fighters -professional fighters. They understand the risks like every other athlete. Guys get killed in Nascar Racing and Football too. But this sport doesn't offer the protection of a steel cage or padding and helmet.

In fact the warriors of this sport go at each other half naked.

When I hear of controversial stoppages like Chavez/Taylor I'm inclined to go with the Ref's decision. I know there were just seconds left in the fight and that Taylor most likely would have won but a referee has a split decision to make.

Chavez/Taylor was one of the more brutal beatings I have ever seen. When Pedro Alcazar died I remember Big George Foreman saying before the stoppage that he didn’t look quite right. But he was released from the hospital only to die in his hotel later.

Fighters like Floyd Mayweather get criticized for being entirely too defensive. I'm clearly not a Floyd fan and just about everyone knows it. I don’t blame him for fighting smart though.

I don’t like him because he fights smart against guys who most boxing fans don’t perceive as a real threat. I would like to see him fight Mosley. That’s a big fight he could take without sustaining any brain damage.

Cotto has been fighting the top guys for years and winning fans along the way. He may have done too much too soon. Only time will tell.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is no real way to predict the outcome of a professional prize fight. We can pick possible winners and gamble on which round a fighter may get KO'd but we have no way of knowing going in that fighter is going to be killed in action.

I'm all for safety. I dont want to see these guys in there with helmets on though. I think ultimately we have to trust in the referee's judgment.

So the next time you see a referee stop a fight, don’t get all lathered up about it. He's doing what he thinks is best for the fighter. The fighter gets to fight another day and his loved ones get to share another Christmas dinner with him.

Go easy on the ref's guys. The commissions and the promoters are only concerned about the money these attractions bring, The refs are there to protect the fighters.

We as boxing fans should give them an encore when they make a tough choice to stop a fight rather than being overly critical. It’s a tough call to make. But it’s a call that lets a man sleep easy at night.

Well Gun we dont always see eye to eye but that was the best read in ALL year. Richard Steel was right then and now, Meldric was taking a thrashing at the hands of the punching Robot in a near prime Julio Cezar Chavez. Our sport is the most difficult and dangerous sport around and more men have died in boxing then in all other sports combined! This is the Original American Bloodsport, it is violent beautiful and exiting I wouldnt have it ANY other way.

nice piece bro. fighters have to be protected, this sport is much more dangerous than others - even mma.

its more dangerous because, according to punch stats, boxers take many more punches to the head in 12 or 10 rounds than other sports. its easier for the brain to recover from one big punch/kick/elbow, than it is to recover from 200 hard punches because the brain swells more and fighters fall into comas.

nice piece
but 355x6Bench your wrong when you say
"more men have died in boxing then in all other sports combined"
Thats just not true.not even close.
as dangerous as boxing clearly is there are actually more fatalities in motor racing alone.

Well bk1980, acording to my book "Boxing Greats" By Steve Bunce- on page ten he writes "The antiquity of he sport is reflected by the fact that Homer wrote vivid descriptions of fighting contests as early as 688 bc - when the first boxing bouts were held at the 23rd Olymiad." - I am no rocket scientist but I dont think there were any motors then.

Ic your point but as humans refs do mess up big time. I think the sport should evolve like football has. Boxing should have instant replay, and better judges, if a judge dont get it right, ban his ass..
I would rather protect the fighters outside the ring from currupt trainers and promoters. some matches are made so uneaven just to hippen some prospect's record. Its also negligence when its given an oponent only 4 days of training. Also sometimes they go to the point of drawing blood in order for them to make weight. + loosing so much weight shrinks the brain so its loose and it make much more prone to brain injury. for the most part when there's a fatality in the ring it's because some shit happened outside the ring.

The sport needs to clean it up and make guys fight on the day of the weigh in to avoid men fighting each other with 20lb. diffrence. ala Gatti vs. Gamache, and not allow Promoters to give Judges sweetheart hotel packs with comped gambling money stacked sky high and bonus for seeing the fight in favor of the house fighter.;That is what happend when the IBF was being investigated by the fbi, they also brought up the fact that some fighters moved up in the rankings without even fighting..Ever notice how the ref during a break in action always pushes the conteder away from the house fighter instead of being even? Or how they will break action to buy time for the fave by telling the corner that he has too much vasaline on his face right when the contender starts to gain ground against the fave or champ? This sport could be worlds better and fair for once.
