Boxing After Dark is back! Well, sort of E-mail
Blog Alert by socalboxer socalboxer

Boxing After Dark came back with three great knockouts:  Yuriorkis Gamboa in the second, Alfredo Angulo in the tenth, and Sergio Martinez in the eighth. All scored one sided knockouts against good, but not great competition. In fact their opponent’s names aren’t really even worth mentioning.  For that reason BAD didn’t get it exactly right.  The fights were not as competitive as they were back in the heyday, nonetheless a star was born tonight.

The one takeaway from this card is: Sergio Martinez OR Alfredo Angulo need to get in the ring against Antonio Margarito!  And here is why…

In ten rounds, Alfredo Angulo threw 1211 punches, landing 400, with most of them power punches.  Do those type of stats remind you of anyone? Angulo’s punch stats and war of atrision style against Margarito is the type of Mexican Revolution that would have Pancho Villa crawling out of his grave guns a’ blazing.

Both Sergio Martinez and Alfredo Angulo fought at 154 pounds, and Antonio Margarito has fought in the division before against Daniel Santos.

The only thing stopping one of these fights is the politics of boxing.  Bob Arum would have to come to terms with Gary Shaw, which is about as likely as having Jose Suliman wear a red IBF belt around his waist.

Of course Angulo and Martinez need more exposure before a fight with Margarito would make economic sense.  Lets hope that we can at least see these two in the ring with each other.

As for Gamboa,  get back to school.  Yeah, you were a gold medalist, but you are not wearing headgear anymore and you seriously need to keep your hands up.  His aggressive style made him get the knockout in the second round, but he was also dropped and hit with punches other elite fighters don’t get hit with.

What would get BAD back on track, is getting Gamboa in the ring with WBC Champ Jorge Linares and Angulo against Martinez with the winner fighting Margarito.

As fans, we should clamor for this to happen.
