Headhunting
It seems
that with Vitali Klitschko signing
to defend his WBC strap against mandatory Juan
Carlos Gomez in March, the younger Klitschko might go after his
“Headhunter” David Haye. Wladimir
was in talks to lock horns with the rugged Chris
Aerrola, but now talks have shifted to the “Haymaker”. Wladimir is free to
make a voluntary defense of his IBF title because a match up with Povetkin won’t take place until
September. Lets see how this one pans out. A match up 6 years in the making…
Big Boy Circuit
Arguably
the two best athletes to ever grace our sport, Evander Holyfield and Roy
Jones Jr are in talks of a proposed heavyweight battle. This wouldn’t be
the first time talks have come up for the two, following Roy Jones dominate
victory over John Ruiz 6 years ago, “The Real Deal” was supposed to be next in
line. However, both of the fighter’s egos got involved and both believed that
each should get the lion’s share of the purse. Now that both men are 40 years
old, and both are at the tail end of their respective careers, maybe now they
can settle their differences. The fight of course would take place at
heavyweight, and would mark the return of Roy Jones to the big boy circuit, the
last place he showed “Greatness”.
Coming to
America
After many
years of defending his crown in
Indonesia,
“The Dragon” Chris John will make
his long awaited
U.S.
debut. The fight will take place on the undercard of the February 28 HBO
Championship Boxing card that features Juan
Manuel Marquez vs Juan Diaz. Chris John will be defending his WBA
featherweight title against
Texas
native Rocky Juarez. If Marquez and
John were to be victorious, we could see a rematch of John’s highly
controversial win over J.M.M.
Who wants a crack at Sergio?
Undefeated
junior middleweight Joe Green has
been forced to pull out of his match up with Sergio Martinez due to kidney stones. Travis Simms, Anthony
Thompson, and Ishe Smith have
been mentioned to take the fight even though its less then 2 weeks away. It
seems like every time Martinez gets a chance to prove he’s grown to become a
much better fighter then when he fought Margarito
8 years ago, something comes up to ruin that chance.
Gold medal vs Bronze medal?
With the
hype around Jermain Taylor fighting Carl Froch killing off, Andre Ward is now in the mix. Dan
Goosen has stated that he has talked to Lou Dibella and the two have verbally
agreed to terms regarding the two Olympic medalists. Andre took home
America’s
only gold in 2004, and Jermain took home the bronze in 2000.
“The Hitter” vs “Alexander The
Great”
With WBC
champion Timothy Bradley looking to
unify with Kendall Holt on April
4th, Junior Witter and Devon Alexander will be squaring off
for the WBC “Interim” title in March. The 2009 year of boxing kicks off with
ESPN Friday Night Fights tomorrow night. The first card will feature Cuban
standouts Yuriorkis Gamboa and Odlanier Solis. So get your lazy boy
ready, chill the beer, and invite the guys over for the kick off of boxing in
2009!
