Can Victor Ortiz give more than is reasonable? E-mail

by bodysnatcher bodysnatcher - Max Kellerman put it nicely this past Saturday when he said "In our sport, unlike other sports, we ask of our fighters to give more than is reasonable." The reality is that we do expect more out of our athletes than they do in other sports.

Tiger Woods was called the toughest athlete recently because he had to walk a golf course with a hurt leg, as fight fans we were outraged because fight fans could provide multiple examples from our sport that would prove that Tiger might be a tough golfer, but he has nothing on our boxing heroes.

We do ask more than is reasonable and that's the reason we follow this sport so passionately, that's the reason we're willing to shell out $50 for fights that sometimes do not meet our expectations; because when they do, there's nothing better.

This past Saturday we got to see Victor Ortiz, one of the rising stars of the sport, react when he was asked to give more than it is reasonable to give. His response was simple "I don't need to be taking this type of punishment." You can't blame the guy, he was dishing out pain that was unreasonable for an opponent to take, but Maidana reacting as a fighter did what came as an instinct to him - give more than it was reasonable.

Cardinal Sin

The cardinal sin in boxing is that YOU DON'T QUIT, it's not fair, but it's the reason why every time I see an MMA fighter quit I think to myself, there's nothing better than boxing.

Regardless of what Golden Boy tries to tell all of us, Victor quit. Again I don’t' blame the kid, he only knows how hard those punches hurt.  The fact that Golden Boy Promotions is trying to act as if the referee is the one that stopped the fight is flat out insulting to everyone that has two working eyes.

Past Greats

In this sport to reach the very top and in order to capture the imagination of fight fans you have to be able to give more than it's reasonable. That's the reason we talk about the great show of courage Cotto had against Clottey and why we criticize Clottey for not wanting to give more. That's the reason why guys like Gatti and Vargas had such huge followings because they would give much more than they should.

The interesting thing about boxing is that you can give more than it's expected of you like Vargas, Gatti, Corrales and Cotto have and it's still not near enough to be mention with the all time greats This is because there's somebody out there that had more skill and was willing to also sacrifice that much to be remembered.

Bad Investment?

At the end of the day you look at the investment Golden Boy Promotions made on Ortiz and you have to say to yourself, they can get him a new trainer, they can rebuild his reputation, but when they put him in the ring again with somebody that ask of him to give more than it's reasonable, will he do it? I can't say if he will or not, but what I can say is that in the boxing world you don't reach the expectations that have been set for Ortiz without having to say yes I will give more.

The bad news for Ortiz and Golden Boy Promotions is that there are bigger fish out there than Maidana, and these fish will ask more questions of Ortiz, questions that Ortiz might simply not be willing to answer.

i remember them talking about tiger woods like that and it made me sick.

i think ortiz was a bad investment. it wasn't just a lack of experiance by ortiz, but by golden boy promotions.

Arum knew this kid didn't have the goods and let him go; Oscar did see it.

On the bright side,At least Ortiz didn`t take a dive and roll around on the canvas like an over-acting queer.......
.......on second thoughts, maybe he should have!!! smilies/wink.gif

Great points and valed too. BUT Cotto quit too against Margarito. It is what it is. I'll watch Ortiz fight again. And are we forgetting what a clasic fight that was. It was up for grabs till the end of the fifth.

I'd love to see a rematch. Just to see if Ortiz can man it up.

Also, I don't know if I would say that Ortiz was destroyed by a fighter that he knocked down 3 times.

It was not that the fight was bad, it was everything else for ortiz. He fought amateurish (not putting up his hands) but the worst to me was the way he quit.(doc stoped it cus ortiz didnt want to fight anymore) He sure had enough to continue but he decided not to and not to mention his afterbout coments were just horrible.. (something about quiting cus he didnt want to talk retarded when old, WTF?)
About Cotto, He got up and well Margo wasn't playing fair i would quit too if i was being hit with cheating-hammers!! + cotto made it up by staying in the fight against clottey eventhough he could've quit after 4 cus of the huge gash he had.

Ortiz did quit. That's for sure. Let's see if he can make it up to us. Nobody quit worse tha Duran, and I think he's been gorgiven in the long run.

I didn't say Maidana destroyed Ortiz, that's something Liverpuncher added to the article. As for the Cotto/Margarito fight, I always found interesting that people said Cotto quit. Did he? sure I'll say he did for sake of arguing, but there's a big difference in going down b/c you have no more energy to get up as opposed to having plenty of energy and saying I'll live to fight another day. As for Duran people always forget that he quit b/c of furstration, not because Ray was hitting him. It's the other way around Duran would have rather have Ray give him a beating than round around in the ring. I honestly don't think this kid will recover from this, by recover I mean become a huge start like Oscar, Floyd, Manny etc, but I've been wrong plenty of times.

What you say could be true. If so, what a waste of talent. I hope he comes back because I love to watch him fight. I think we will know soon enough.
He would have been better off taking a knee like Cotto did, and then keeping his mouth shut.

Ortiz wasnt destroyed because he knocked his opponent down three times? Ortiz was hit in the face, lost his composure, and had absolutely no answer defensively. He looked like a street fighter and then gave up. Ortiz's natural offensive talent is the only thing that kept Maidana from completely humiliating him.

Mano your definition of passing and the actual definition of passing are two completely different things.

Personally i wouldnt consider madaina a top ellite fighter. His impresive record can be desceiving because he hasnt fought in the states for once, and besides kotelnik there's no other reputable fighter on his record + he lost that match. He sure gets much props (By far his best accomplishment in the sport) for beating ortiz but dont be surprised if he gets KO'd against a true ellite fighter.
Im not mad that Vic lost, Im dissapointed that he quit.
