Chavez Jr. vs. Oscar de La Hoya - the Perfect Storyline
By swodogg - The Mexican people never really forgave Oscar de la Hoya for
what he did in 1996. I saw it all unfold
with my own eyes….
Oscar had beaten some pretty good fighters in the mid
90’s. Rafael Ruelas the slugger from
Yerba Buena Mexico, the "Clown prince of boxing" Jorge “el Maromero” Paez, El
Chicanito Genaro Hernandez from southern California. But there were not any really big names on his resume except when Julio Cesar Chavez aka "JC
superstar" came along.....Click for More
I remember anytime Chavez fought, it was a true boxing
event. We were there to watch a fighter
performing his craft. It wasn’t about
celebrity status, CD’s, or promotions. We’d call up the buddies and ask if they would get the fight. We had no cable so we would go over and eat,
drink and be merry.
So with Oscar de la Hoya coming up in the ranks in the
1990’s, he seemed much different than the Mexican and Mexican American fighters
we saw each time out. It was his style
of fighting, the way he spoke and the way he ultimately took out JC Chavez,
Mexican fight fans never forgave.
We all were there watching Chavez vs. De La Hoya, Closed
Circuit on 4 projector screens in a NBA baskeball arena. This fight was too big for Pay Per View and
I don’t remember any other fights since then that has been shown on “Closed
Circuit.”
People were riled up hoping to see a good show. It was old school vs. new school, Chicano
vs. Mexicano, celebrity pretty boy vs. a professional legendary fighter.
Many in attendance wanted to see De la Hoya get taught a
lesson. One thing they forgot was the Lion of Cuilican was
becoming an Old Lion.
We all know how it ended - with Chavez face covered in a mask of his own blood. Chavez trying to land and gets beaten to the punch. Blood coming out above his eye with Oscar de la
Hoya celebrating in the corner like a wild man when Chavez couldn’t continue. This image would never be forgotten by the
Mexican people…..you can knockdown a hero but dancing in the ring after doing
so? That’s a no no.
Bottles, beer, cans anything not bolted down in the basketball arena was thrown at the projector screens. People
were booing, pissed off at what they had seen.
We all learned that Chavez was not the same fighter he was a
few years earlier and not the same guy. This was truly the tail end of his career.
Now, we flip the script. Chavez Jr. coming up the ranks as De La Hoya looks like a fighter who
can no longer pull the trigger. Imagine what a fight with these two in Mexico
City’s Azteca Stadium would be like? Have you ever seen soccer fans in action during world cup? It would be very similar. Fans in Mexico will never
forget how Oscar reacted when he beat up Chavez. It wasn’t that he beat him, it was the way he celebrated and
didn’t respect the champ after the fight that dealt the final blow.
Mexico city is one of the largest cities in the world, with over
22 million people living there….(San Francisco for example has only 1 million at most). I was there a few times this year, hanging
out taking it all in. Out of the 22 million people living there, I can count the De La Hoya fans on my left hand.
The city was the Economic/Political/ and religious center to
the Aztec people, who were known for performing human sacrifices to the Sun
God. If this fight takes place in
Azteca stadium, today's ancestors of the Aztec people will prepare another human sacrifice….that’s for
sure.

Nice work Swo! Very informative. If this fight happens I think it would be huge, but I don't think Jr. has a chance... DLH looked like ABSOLUTE garbage his last fight, but he was fighting the #1 pound for pound guy! Jr. has fought nobodies his whole career and I just don't see the skill level outta him. He has average speed, average power, and suspect defense. I respect and recognize the lust for revenge for what DLH did to Sr., but you are picking the wrong guy for the job. Jr. is a soft rich kid who has decent skill, but not the balls or mean streak his dad had. DLH's only losses are to elite-level fighters... I think DLH smokes Jr. pretty bad! Then again, thats why they fight the fights!
way to put jr's defense on blast here babyface! im a fan no doubt, i hope he's on the real come-up! but he gets tagged liek a mo'fo! but it seems like he can take some licks! lets just see whats in store for the vatito que no?!
