Dana White on going head to head with Mayweather: Its on! E-mail

Floyd Mayweather will be fighting Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19, the same day of a UFC event in Dallas.  The two shows will compete with each other and many wonder which will have a bigger audience.  According to the UFC website, the headliner of their event appears to be someone named M. Swick  vs. M.  Kampmann. Does anyone outside of the hardcore UFC fan even know these guys?!  White admits that Mayweather can “sell a fight”.   When HBO’s 24/7 starts, you can bet Mayweather's fight will begin to do very well at the box office.  Read on for more of what he said…

He goes on to claim that Pacquiao is a “Superstar” while Floyd is not.  Truth is they are both superstars.  Keep in mind that De La Hoya vs Mayweather out sold De La Hoya vs Pacquiao by a wide margin and the same is true when comparing Mayweather and Pacquiao's fights with Ricky Hatton.

White makes  a decent point that the boxing undercards may not be so great, but that just emphasizes how popular the main event fighters are.   UFC 100 had to be stacked to the rim with their most popular guys, and it still didn’t sell more PPV than Pacquiao vs Hatton in the US and UK.

Lastley he is completely inconsistent when he says “boxing is in trouble” while at the same time says “big fights sell”.  So which one is it?  Is boxing in trouble or do big fights  sell?  We will find out Sep 19th and in November when Pacquiao takes on Cotto.

And he's gunna get killed in the ratings if he goes PPV. Come on dana, put that shit on PPV pussy. My guess is he goes with standard cable. How you gunna compete with Floyd/JMM, on Mexican Independance weekend no less, with Chris John/Rocky Juarez II and Zab on the card?

A lot of what he says makes real sense though.

Dana White is an asshole, but the guy is an AMAZING promoter. Boxing promoters should take some lessons from this guy. I think boxing is better than MMA in every category except this one. Dana is the czar, and he makes VERY few mistakes, and his bank account show it. The guy can sell a fight, , e can sell his league, he can run a show, and he is a shrewd businessman. If Dana White retired, MMA would be dead in two years. Think about it, no other MMA league is competing, no other MMA league is doing a very good job of keeping their heads above water, but Dana has a license to print his own money.

its true that he does a good job w UFC, but how can he say boxing is dead when he also says that he was scared sh*tless to go up against De La Hoya.

the mistake he makes is he promotes the UFC well, but doesn't promote his fighters well. He has ZERO superstars like floyd, manny, delahoya...dont give me Lesnar cuz he was popular through the WWE.

and Gun Ru makes a good point, Juarez vs John is a pretty good scrap.
