Devon Alexander Stops Urango! E-mail
Devon Alexander knocked out Juan Urango with a right uppercut at 1:12 of the eighth round to unify the WBC and IBF light welterweight titles on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Alexander (20-0, 13 knockouts) made a successful defense of his WBC title, while taking away the IBF title from Urango.  Read on for more…
Urango had won the sixth round on all three judges' cards and carried the action in the seventh. But Alexander abruptly turned the fight around and ended it in the eighth.

First, he knocked down Urango with a startling right uppercut. The Colombian, however, got up quickly, but appeared dazed. Alexander pounced with the right cross that wobbled Urango, and then followed up with the uppercut that finished the job.

Alexander, a southpaw from St. Louis, controlled the action in Round 1 with his jab, though he did take one good, hard right. Urango continued to stalk Alexander in Round 2, landing the occasional hook, but just as the bell sounded to end the round, Urango was blasted with a right to the head.

After an uneventful Round 3, things heated up in Round 4. Both fighters landed solid blows. A counter right hand by Urango caught Alexander flush the face, but it failed to slow him down.

Urango continued to be the aggressor in the fifth round, rattling Alexander with an uppercut midway through the round. Urango kept the pressure on in Round 6, and seemed to be frustrating Alexander with his relentless attack.

It was more of the same in the seventh. Urango landed the harder shots. Alexander scored with his jab. The momentum appeared to be clearly with Urango, whom the crowd began to get behind, sensing that an upset was likely.

Two well-place uppercuts and a right cross quickly dashed those hopes in the next round.

It was Alexander's first fight since August 2009 when he faced Junior Witter, who retired before the start of Round 8 because of a left hand injury. Alexander was comfortably ahead on all cards when the bout was stopped.

Urango's two previous losses came to fighters who were also unbeaten when he faced them.

Ricky Hatton was 41-0 when he handed Urango, who now fights out of Cooper City, Fla., his first loss in January 2007 in an IBF light welterweight title bout.

Andre Berto was 24-0 when he defeated Urango in May 2009 for the WBC welterweight title. Urango lost decisive unanimous decisions in both bouts.

what an entertaining fight, a clash of styles classic, Urango came in focused and ready to win just like i wanted it to see Alexander get proven, and the kid passed the test, he took huge shots from Urango, but didnt back off for one second, he kept on boxing and with a high work rate were both fighters gave it their all, till Devon came in with a huge knockdown, when Urango was knocked down for the 2nd time i clearly saw he couldnt continue i was very impressed since Urango has alot of heart and a very tough chin.

man devon lookes like he def has potential to be great ko'd the unstopable urango wow.and looked way better than berto did against urango .berto fought like a lil bitch holding every second devon did his thing and ko'd the use to be unstopable iron twin..( even though i think urangos amor had a chink in it since the randall bailey crushin right hand that was the first time urango was droped in his career) but never the less devon has thrust him self into the lime light with such a great performance of heart, power and skill.....he def has a good chance of beating anybody at 140 no question about that

I don't like how all these so called boxing fans are jumping on Devon's wagon. He's quick and we all know that's Urango's weakness, just as Berto did. Devon hit Urango with a shot that Urango didn't see, but Urango got up, clearly raised his hands, and was still stunned from the punch and went down again. He got up and raised his hands again, clearly indicating he was able to continue. Just as any other fighter who gets caught with a good punch, is still allowed to get up and continue fighting. But fucking Estevez halted the fight and now Devon is praised to be the next boxing star. Just want to let you so called boxing fans know, Urango got robbed and nobody's noticing. I'm upset that nobody is noticing that it was a premature stoppage. Devon was celebrating, but I know if it was the other way around, he'd be crying about a premature stoppage. C'mon folks, let these warriors finish what they started. They work very hard at their craft. That's all I got to say.

i dont think was premature when he got up he was not ok he was glassy eyed and blinking like crazy ..he would have just took unesary punishment..the second knockdown he went down from a punch that didnt even land solid so why let it continue so he can get hit flush ..his armor is broken it got broken by randall bailey his chin will never be the same and now with devons ko of him i bet he will be prone to knock downs now

HOW CAN YOU NOT GIVE THIS GUY CREDIT HIS FIRST TITLE DEFENCE IS AGAINST ANOTHER CHAMPION..JUST GOT HIS BELT AND VERY NEXT FIGHT UNIFYS BELTS ...NO QUESTION THIS GUY HAS THE HEART OF A TRUE CHAMPION AND DEF DARES TO BE GREAT HE COULD HAVE EASY TOOK A #15 RANKED NOBODY FOR TITLE DEFENCE BUT HE OPTIONED TO UNIFY IF OTHER FIGHTERS HAD THE HEART OF DEVON AND URANGO BOXING WOULD BE BOOMING

Devon showed that he's got skills, and heart. this guy stood his ground and took some punches for it, but in the end he made a statement at 140+. unlike berto that played it safe when he fought urango.
Much props for Urango for getting up after that killing uppercut.

Alexander Vs Bradley - Lets Get it on!!

victor76, you're crazy, if i were referee i wouldve stopped it too, he clearly couldnt continue, he took almost a 9 count to get up the 2nd time and got up slow as hell and blinking and scartchin his face all around, sure he got up, but he was unable to continue.

Look Jandro, Urango is a warrior and I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Yea he blinks like crazy even when he's not fighting, thats what he does. He got up like he's taught to do, get up on the count of 9 like all the fighters. Marquez, Gatti (R.i.P.), Bradley, and many other fighters, who get dropped and get up and don't pick up they're arms like Urango did and didn't wobble. He looked good enough to continue. So Jandro, get your facts straight. That's the reason why you wouldn't be a good ref, just like Estevez isn't. Devon's good but I would've liked to have seen the outcome.

dude his legs werent there, whats the point of continuing if he was gonna keep on falling? he clearly couldnt continue, i dont see it being a bad call, you're the only one here who calls it a bad call.

and ur the only one who fights with me dude im just stating what i think. he was dazed but not out ive seen other fighter in worst shape that have the opportunity to go on and finishe we all know urango was putting hands but because urango is not a big name so they stoped it if his legs werent under him he wouldnt of got the wey he did and raised his hands i love fighters with heart and that come out to fight lets not get too excited over devon yet he was saved by bad refering

his legs werent under him man, look for a replay of the 2nd knockdown, he fell down alone, Alexander barely touched him the 2nd time.

hey jandro u mustve just become a boxing fan kid ive been a loyal boxing fan since 95. im just saying urango is not a big name so thats y know one cares and to me it was too early he should have continued

I think everything worked out fine for both of them. I dont think urango had a chance at this point he was loosing most of rounds and he got caught with that upper early in the round there was almost 2minutes left on it! I think urango will fight for a champ belt again cus he's an exciting fighter and again... the dude got up from that uppercut! can't ask much from him! well i guess he could learn to use a jab for next time. smilies/smiley.gif

PS. I guess as a latin fighter, we'd rather get koed before a ref stoppage. Urango did got up but wasnt in his 5 senses, and ref did the right humaine thing we're just comparing it to other refs that have let it prolonged fight too long. I mean it is boxing we all have our own judgements as of when it shou've been stopped. Margo vs mosley shoulve ended sooner. then again even Torres got a count from ref after that zzzz brutal ko by holt on their second fight. lol

I THINK WAS A GOOD STOPAGE THERES NO WAY URANGO WAS GONNA RECOVER AND MUCH LESS WIN THE FIGHT HE HAD ALREADY CAUGHT DEVON FLUSH AND HAD LITTLE EFFECT PRIOR TO KNOCK DOWN SO AFTER KNOCK DOWN MAKE THAT 2 KNOCKDOWNS WHAT COULD HE REALLY HAVE DONE ..(LEARN TO BOX WITH 4 1/2 ROUNDS LEFT ) AND AGAIN SUFFERD BRUTAL KNOCKDOWN IN PRIOR FIGHT BY RANDALL BAILEY ...URANGOS CHIN WAS NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME AFTER BAILEY SAT HIM DOWN ..AND LIKE JANDRO SAID HE WAS BARELY TOUCHED AND WENT DOWN FOR THE 2ND TIME

Idunno about barely touched! The punch before the last one twisted Urango's neck. (a right hook i think followed by the barelytouched uppercut)

right hand did land but not flush was a clubing punch and devon didnt get extension on punch had urango not been knocked down prior he would not have gone down.....hey JoeLius just realized what your avatar is lol funny

see sikwitit saw it wasnt flush, and Urango just plumeted, there was also almost 2 minutes left, he wouldnt of survived that round, and Victor ive been a boxing fan since i was a kid, and refs are there to PROTECT fighters, not let them get butchered, it was clear he was hurt badly and further punishment couldve ended his career, thats why the ref had to step in.

Look ive seen alot worse and they continue and win. He has ko power in both hands. Let the dude finish. Devon claims that Urango wasnt doing nothing to him. i think he was getting hit and he was lucky they stopped the fight the stoppage was weak and so is ur pic bro but chalez homie maybe u know more than me i guess but someone needs to stand up for fighters like urango. if refs like estevez all we had around then maybe fighters like gatti corrales and many others wouldnt exit and we wouldnt have the pleasure to see this fighters give us this great shows and maybe boxing is not for u kid its not for the faint hearted maybe u should follow golf or tennis
