Devon Alexander Wins Decision Over Kotelnik E-mail
Devon Alexander retained his WBC and IBF junior welterweight titles with a unanimous 12-round decision over Andriy Kotelnik on Saturday night.

Alexander (21-0) won 116-112 on all three cards.

The 23-year-old St. Louis native scored enough points early to withstand a late charge from Kotelnik (31-4-1), a 31-year-old former WBA super lightweight champion from Ukraine.  Read on for more…

Alexander suffered a deep cut over his right eye in the 10th round but was able to keep away from Kotelnik long enough to record the decision. He hopes to face fellow titleholder Timothy Bradley (26-0) in a battle of unbeaten 140-pound fighters in January.

“I thought I did enough to win,” Alexander said. “It was an OK performance. He was tough as nails, give him credit.”

Earlier, IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud successfully defended his crown with a hard-earned unanimous decision over veteran Glen Johnson.

Alexander, a southpaw, peppered Kotelnik with combinations and short jabs during the first five rounds. Kotelnik, a silver medalist at the 2000 Olympics, got untracked in the ninth round and felt he deserved the decision.

“I want the belt. I deserve it,” he said through a translator. “If the fight were anywhere else but here, I’d be the champion.”

Alexander, slowed by cramps in the 12th round, was the more aggressive fighter and held a 1,113-763 edge in total punches thrown.

Cloud (21-0), 28, from Tallahassee, Fla., used his strength to wear down the 41-year-old Johnson (50-14-2), who was born in Jamaica. All three judges scored the fight 116-112.

In a preliminary bout, Cornelius Bundrage recorded a technical knockout of IBF junior middleweight champion Cory Spinks 1:28 into the fourth round. Bundrage (30-4), the mandatory challenger, knocked Spinks into the ropes and referee Mark Nelson stopped the fight before completing the count. Bundrage has 18 knockouts. Spinks is 37-6.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., Evander Holyfield and St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson were in attendance.

It was more of a skill issue than fighting at home.
im starting to think that Alexander is one more of HBO's creation. in rd 10 they said that Alexander had a better hitting percentage just when i was trying to tell my buddy that he's only hitting gloves. on the other hand, kotelnik had pretty good timing and was clovering 'The Great' on a steady basis. Devon barely made the 12 rounds and got hurt several times against a 30something wins and only 13 ko fighter. He aint ready to Desert storm, Fogeaboutit!

in the other fight i was hoping to see Road Warrior pull it of vs a younger, faster fighter. that would've been awesome. What's wrong with these new generation of boxers? im not impressed.

HBO promoted fighter and Hometown decision, I hope he meets Maidana or Bradley soon so that he gets KTFO.

I didn't get to see the fight, but my best friend called me and said that Kotelnik should've won. He told me Kotelnik was more technical and sharper than Devon, he cut his eye and said that almost floored Devon a couple of times.

Kotelnik is an incredibly accurate puncher. Great showing on his part. I have to say though....Alexander didn't look his best, but he fought damn hard from rounds 1-12. As tired as he looked in between rounds, he still fought hard once the round starts. It was for sure an incredible learning experience for him, and I believe he will become a better fighter after this fight. You only become better after a good tough fight like that. Max Kellerman said it best. He's not quite Devon Alexander "The Great" just yet. Right now...he's Devon Alexander "The Good". But he will be great one day.

Alexander won the fight but it wasn't by a wide margin. He simply was the more busy fighter which is the only reason he got the win over Kotelnik. Clean effective punching definitely was Kotelnik. Plus, lets not forget he was a former champion and that means something. I didn't expect Devon to win so easily.

He didn't win easily. He barely won at all.

good fight but if you want the belt, go after it. kotelnik just blocked and threw one or 2 shots, he connected but wasnt throwing enough to win. devon, who had a horrible, just horrible game plan, won by being the busier fighter. what devon shouldve done was go inside. phonebooth type of fight is what wouldve worked. i had it 115-113 for devon. the kid made it hard on himself. and styles make fights, just cuz he barely won does not mean he isnt an elite 140 lb fighter.

Agreed w lazie, I also blame the corner for the kid's mistake.(maybe its time to move on and apart from corner) He made it tough on himself. Kotelnik is good but slow, and Devon respected him way too much. Small things like keep his right foot on the outside would've decreased kotelnic's accuracy by half. one thing is for sure, Devon will benefit from a fight like this, but def wrong game plan.

In all my years of watching boxing, I do not think I have ever seen a lower jab percentage than what Devon Alexander had to offer the other night.
He did not look good at all...couldn't figure out how to penetrate Kotelnik's guard.
Alexander got a gift decision and, in doing so, lost all of the momentum that he had gained from his impressive KO of Juan Urango.

In my humble opinion, Tim Bradley would wipe the floor with this kid.

everyone is acting like no top fighters have bad days. for the most part i think he was overlooking this guy and we have seen that bite guys a lot of times. he had a bad days. it doesnt all of a sudden mean he is not what everyone thought he was. only person in that devision that has a chance to beat him when he is mentally and physically where he should be is bradley. he obviously will be focused for all top contenders and will beat them all. next bout should be against bradley so we shall see what happens. khan wont be facing eather one of them for a long long long long time. when he does good night.

Well to be truthful i dunno what you guys think, BUT from watching Devon interviews and watching him in the ring yes he is talented and all but you gotta admit he's kinda dumb. He's not a smart kid and doesn't know how to adjust in between rounds, Kotelnik on the other hand is a smart guy that's why he probably made Devon look bad. Devon NEEDS a good corner to listen to cause is not a smart kid and again if you watch his interviews and fights he's not the kind of guy that thinks for himself. I say Bradley or Maidana finish him.
