Dirrell beats Abraham on disqualification in 11th E-mail
DETROIT -- Andre Dirrell was less than six minutes away from a dominating unanimous decision win before chaos erupted.

Instead, Dirrell beat Arthur Abraham on a disqualification for an intentional foul at 1:13 of the 11th round on Saturday night in the second stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic.  Read more...

Dirrell (19-1) slipped when he was hit by a glancing blow to the chin in the corner. While Dirrell was sitting down, Abraham hit him across the chin with a right hand and Dirrell couldn't continue.

"I was not looking at his feet, I was looking at his eyes," Abraham said through an interpreter. "I didn't see if he was down."

During the confusion after Abraham's illegal punch the ring filled with people, including, Dirrell's brother, Anthony.

He tried to rush to check on his brother, who was down in the opposite corner, and had to be restrained.

I just wanted to see if my brother was all right," Anthony Dirrell said. "I apologize for my actions. But I was just worried."

Dirrell seemed disoriented and unsure that he won the fight. He was sent to the hospital for a brain scan. Anthony Dirrell said his brother was OK, but promoter Gary Shaw said Dirrell didn't really know where he was as he was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Andre Dirrell was comfortably ahead when the fight was stopped.

Italy's Guido Cavalleri scored it 97-92, Michigan's Frank Garza 98-91 and Thailand's Hanek Hongtonhkam had it 97-92

It was Abraham's first loss in 31 career fights.

"He executed a perfect game plan and I'm proud of him and I just want to hug him and kiss him," said Dirrell's trainer and uncle, Leon Lawson Jr. "But it was blemished."

There was also controversy after the fight about whether Dirrell should have a steroid or doping test. Abraham's camp said that if Dirrell didn't have such a test, he should be disqualified.

Shaw was angry that Abraham's people talked about the steroid and doping test before expressing any concern about Dirrell's condition.

Both fighters had a lot of support at Joe Louis Arena. Dirrell is from Flint, about 60 miles north of Detroit. The Armenian-born Abraham drew a large contingent of Armenian-Americans from the Detroit area, who carried a large flag.

Dirrell dominated the fight with his mobility and hand speed, landing strong punches to Abraham's head and body throughout the fight.

Dirrell knocked Abraham down with about 30 seconds left in the fourth with a right hand. Abraham got back to his feet and took a standing eight count. Dirrell landed a couple of more blows before the round ended.

Dirrel opened a cut by Abraham's right eye in the seventh.

It appeared that Abraham knocked Dirrel down with a straight right in the 10th, but it was called a slip by the referee.

Abraham began to rally in the eighth round, but Dirrell was able to avoid the slugger's heavy blows. At one point in the round Dirrell used the rope a dope tactic to duck most of the most dangerous punches and continue to frustrate Abraham.

Dirrell bounced back with a strong ninth round, in which the action was halted for a couple of minute for a cut to Abraham's head caused by a head butt.

"I was getting my chances and in the eighth and ninth round, he was clearly down and the referee didn't count," Abraham said.

Dirrell got two points for the win and moves into a second place tie with Carl Froch and Andre Ward in the tournament standings.

Abraham is still in first place with three points because of his knockout of Jermaine Taylor in the first round. Dirrell is now 1-1 in the tournament.

He lost a decision to WBC world champion of England Carl Froch in Froch's hometown of Nottingham, England.

The next fight in the series on June 19, in Oakland between Ward and Allan Green -- who replaced Taylor in the tournament. Both Ward and Green were in attendance on Saturday night.

Direll was clearly down abraham was losing the fight and that was his way out!!How could he ay he wasnt looking at his feet when he hit him he was looking at his eyes abraham is a lying piece of shit dirells head was at abrahams knees so dirells eyes were below abrahams waist so if abraham was lokking in dirells eyes when he hit him direll was obviously on the floor you f*#ckin idiot!!!abraham should of admitted he was wrong like a man instead of denie it even when he was shown the replay...I believe direll would of stayed away and outboxed abraham for the last couple of round to win ..Direll wins either way!!!!

Welcome to USA f-'king' abraham! (miranda dont count cus he aint american). Direll performed his plan to perfection. Frustrated abraham gave a cheap shot. he also retaliated by throwing rabbit punches when he tought he was getting low blows when infact he was pushing dirells punches down. Ater the fight Fkin sore looser was asking for direll to test for drugs even prior to wishing direll well in his health. What a dush. This fight is Another great example of how speed beats power.

cheap shot king arthur did hit him cheapish and unnecessary but dirrel didnt have to get all oscar dramatic over it he didnt have to do that he was up in the score cards it just made him look stupid and fake he was getting hit cleanly during the fight and he took it thats my opinion folks

Everyone's entitled to apinions. i dont really see a reason as of why direll would fake it or be dramatic about it.

@victor direll was clearly confused and should of been taken out on a stretcher directly to a hospital. If you think direll was acting you must have been watching a different fight!!

i doubt direll was actin he took a flush right hook from a crushing puncher . arthur was clearly frustrated and desparate and let his emotions get the better of him he knew direll sliped and was defenceless ...i suggest these people who think he was fakin look at punch a few times was flush on point of chin turned head around no way he was gonna recover from that blow .for gods sake he gave jermain a concusion

at first i thought he was faking it, but i was happy cause damn did i want Abe to lose badly lol, but when i saw his leg twitching thats when i got worried, hell he woke up and didnt know what was happening he was crying and saying he lost by KO and his bro was like "dude you won he was dq'd" and Dirrell didnt realize anything, but man what a fight Dirrel owned Arthur and knocked him down, Arthur wasnt as brave when he saw himself on the floor, he crapped his pants and was on the run you could see fear in his eyes lol.

First off, i would like to say I'm glad that Dirrel won.. but I think he was getting gassed out and Arthur was getting to him. I think Andre got hit while he was clearly down, but I don't think he was hurt at all, just really tired. Abraham shouldn't of got so flustered, he looked on his way to scoring a KO.. slip in the 10th was a knock down. Lawrence Cole is the worst ref i've ever seen, he missed a standing eight count when Andre sent Arthur into the ropes almost putting him out the ring in round 8 as well.

boxerharris, Dirrell wasnt getting gassed at all, if he wouldve gotten gassed do you think he wouldve gotten up so fast from the 10th rnd knockdown??? he wasnt even remotely hurt.

not gassed but def not like earlier rounds. Abe had gotten some clean shots later in the fight and even knocked him down eventhough ref was blind to see it. Still not enought to fake it. I think dirrell would've continued beating the heck out of abraham. Abe should continue to do well with some fighters like frotch and kessler but should have probs with direll and maybe green. (we'll have to see how green is coming to tourney first)

Abe KOs Froch, but will have trouble with Kessler, and i think Green should be able to KO Arthur.

It was a cheap shot, I think Dirrel overplayed it though. At the point of the cheap shot Abe was starting to hurt him a little and closing the gap and even though Dirrel was way ahead, he was starting to give in a little. The knock down from Abe was clean and I think Dirrel was starting to feel that pressure. Dirrel looked great in the beginning.

hard to tell if was actin cause really did appear to think he lost the fight ...but regarless if acted no way he was gonna be able to continue after that shot was a flush right hook on point of the chin no way he would have recoverd and been able to hold AA back for 4 min after takin that punch ..the ref made right decision AA robbed him self of the oportunity to win

Thats right Sik but I dont think the shot did all that what I am saying is that he was getting hurt and the shot was the topper even if played up a bit.

The bad part for AA was he probly would have gotten to him anyways if he would have shown patientce.

yeah AA def had the momentu swinging his way ...i think direll would have just ran till time was up but AA def had good chance of catchin him after he dropped direll even though ref didnt call it direll was shaky and looked a little tired AA robbed him self of oportunity ...still andre gave him a schooling cut him and dropped him did what no one has been able to do

I picked Abraham to win but Dirrell did what Ward did to Kessler. Good win. Abraham didn't get to the ko but should've known better when the man was down that you don't hit him. He had him going a bit down the stretch until the cheap shot. What a damn retard. lol

Dont know about acting,AA punches hurt hard enough when your standing in front of him,so can imagine it hurtin a lot more when your kneelin and offering your chin on a platter.Anyway Dirrel thought hed lost, seems like he was pretty mixed up.But he was well ahead on points and im sure he had enough in the tank to last the remaindin rds.AA was gettin frustrated and i think thats why he gave the cheap shot.

AA definitely delivered a dirty blow. I wasn't sure at first if Direll was acting or not. But after further observation it was clear he was in bad shape. Direll needs to take some time off heal properly and comeback. He's young and has his whole career in front of him. No need to take unnecessary risk.
