Is Victor Ortiz the next “Golden Boy” or the next Panchito Bojado?
>
A new
boxing star was born this weekend. Unfortunately
for the Golden boy, it was the wrong guy. This weekend was supposed to be a showcase fight. A fight in the
Mecca
of west coast boxing, the
StaplesCenter, with Victor Ortiz
to make his grand showing to the masses. Well it didn’t exactly work out that way. The KO loss this weekend of boxing's top
prospect showed that Ortiz is indeed human and posed lots of questions about
the future of the "heir apparent." Is
Victor Ortiz the next Golden boy or will he become the next Panchito Bojado?
Lots of
hype has filled the airwaves of late for Vicious Ortiz. He was named the top boxing prospect in the
world by ESPN and has been making lots of noise on Spanish language television
and Radio. Just last week, Ortiz was
showcased on “el Piolin” radio show rated number one in the Spanish language
media along with Oscar de la Hoya to promote his upcoming fight. This weekend was his first ever headlined show, on
HBO no less, but one man flew in from thousands of miles away, Marcos Maidana to
rain on his parade.
Who’s to
blame for the Ortiz destruction we saw this weekend? You can try to blame the trainer for trying
to out muscle Marcos Maidana, Oscar de la Hoya for putting him in with such a
dangerous fighter, or even Ortiz fight night jitters. However the real blame can be put on the
right hand of Maidana and the lack of defense
of Victor Ortiz. At 26-1, 25 wins by KO,
Maidana has a straight right hand made to put people to sleep.
The
Argentine came to fight. In his first
fight ever in the
USA
he was not looking for a simple paycheck, he was looking for another KO on his
ledger. As for the defense of Victor
Ortiz you ask? Pulling your head straight
back and leaving your guard down is not proper path to becoming the next de la Hoya. You can get away with this from lesser
fighters but not world contenders.
Ortiz has a
lot to learn from the outing. Its nice
to see young fighters stepping up and facing tough competition. However how they lose these tough battles as
well is just as important. Jorge Barrios
vs. Acelino Frietas, the Argentine was bloody and beaten but became a fan
favorite for his willingness to go out on his shield. Ortiz was bleeding and battered but seemed to
throw up his hands and shake his head in the 6th round. Cotto as well showed true grit with early
knockdowns in his career but was able to show championship heart to mount a comeback in the later rounds. Ortiz has yet to show what he
can mount when in the hole. At age 22 we
still have a chance to find out, if he learns from this loss.
There will
be more outings and time to rebuild some confidence. The aura of invincibility however is now gone
from Ortiz as the heir apparent to the Golden Boy. Future foes will be gunning for him with the
straight right hand at the ready looking to become the next Marcos Maidana.
i'll answer this for you. he is the next bojado. you can't just be talented in boxing. you have to have something else that makes you willing to put your life in the ring. he doesn't have it.
I think hes more of a Kermit Cintron. He can win a belt and become a belt holder but he'll get crushed a few more times by eating right hands like that.
i say he is worse than bajado at least bajado never gave up just got out worked i say ortiz made all mexican fighters look bad ..mexican fighters are warriors and thats not ortiz ..warriors go out on there shield cotto did not give up when he was cut went 12 hard rounds took much more punishment than ortiz ...guess future golden boy exposed as bronze
he didnt make Mexican fighters look bad man!! haha!! trust me! ask any of those Native Mexican fighters if they even consider him Mexican man....see what they tell you!! im a hardcore proud ass Mexican born in El Paso Tx. as close as you can get to the border and even im an iffy Mexican to the Natives like my jefitos(parents)!! Vic made himself look like shit, as well as most of us that really thought he was going to creep into a title shot by the end of the year!! all i can hope for now is to see Chino Maidana fuck up Glassy Khan and/or get a rematch with Kotelnik!!
golden boy is gonna try to build his career back from this loss but he's will never be a big draw. maidana on the other hand would become the next star in boxing. maidana would probably fight valero, berto or campbell in the future.
No, the 23 year old kid will be a man soon. He'll be back to be an undisputed champ. He just miscalculated Maidana. He must learn how to box from hereon onwards. and mark my words buddy, maidana can't do it in a rematch with him in the immediate future.
Maidana reminds me of the skinny kid from the Philippines when he fought the 1st time in US. i think he fought Ledwaba that time. Maidana maybe the next Manny Pacquiao but too early to tell. Sorry Golden Looooosssseeeeeeeerrsssss!
a true gentleman accept ligit defeat and respect the current no. 1 p4p in the worl...he must respect manny pacquiao the true and the best fighter in the world today..
this ORTIZ guy talk like SHIT! he doesn't know what he's saying. Ortiz said because of that, I blame me not his nor shes sounds crazy! I think ORTIZ sound like a DRUNK BASTARD portraying the rule of a captain who's shit kissing the ass of MAIDANA. What a loser! A friendly advice to ORTIZ, next time he lose a fight GET some SCRIPT from the GOLDEN BOY before you TALK like DUMB ASS SHIT! FAGGOT!
anything golden boy hype nowadays fell short of expectation. ortiz has good basics and he is only 22. he needs 3 future good wins in order to recover back to the limelight. his confidence is down now and may not recover in time but he has still time to adjust. he is in a very talented weight and for him to recover is to beat a great boxer in his weight class. i thought after cotto, mayweather, mosley and marquez, this boxer diaz will be the next one for the pacman.
dont talk shit without even knowing the guy or what he is capable of. It was like he said a bad night for him and lack of listening to his corner instead of sticking to the plan. No doubt he'll get a rematch and beat that ass.
There's no doubt that ortiz has enough skills to beat madaina in a rematch and perhaps become a champ with the help of golden boy, but he'll never last. He said it himself in the interview. "I don't want to be old and talk retarded" preetymuch he won't go to 5th gear like mexicans and PR would!. FTP!! (No HUEVOS!)
Victor ortiz is nothing like de la hoya the real next golden boy is THE PRIDE OF PARAMOUNT. CHARLES HUERTA. He's on his way to the top and no can't stop him and as for panchito he's a has been ! No more returns just give up already bro
I picture ortiz retiring at a very early age. Doesnt seem to have the heart even if he possess the talent. As far as his age being a factor thats bullshit. Look at Mike Tyson at his age, acutally younger and a belt holder. The only thing about Ortiz's age that is a concern in boxing is his piss poor public speaking.
Manny Pacquiao, right, gets some help warming up from his strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza during an open work out in Grapevine, Texas, on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Pacquiao squares off against Joshua Clottey in a welterweight bout on Saturday, March 13, at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
