Mayweather-Mosley not a title fight

Richard Schaefer has confirmed that Floyd Mayweather will not be fighting for Shane Mosley’s WBA welterweight title. However if Mosley wins it may count as a title defense and if he losses the WBA may reserve the right to keep him as champion or make the title vacant. "This is not a WBA championship fight, but on a separate side, we are currently discussing with the WBA, for Shane, that Shane would be defending his belt. For the purpose of this call, it's bascially a non-WBA fight. The two best fighters fighting each other, that's what's at stake here," Schaefer said.

Fighters are required to pay a fee (% of fight purse) to the fight's governing organization in order to be elligible for titles, org ranking, etc. In the case of a purse as high as Mayweather collects this small percentage can equate to a high dollar amount. Say the fee is a few hundred K in this case then Mayweather is option to keep that in lieu of being awarded the belt. Really, he has won enough titles and gained enough notoriety that he doesn't need the belt. Sanctioning fees have been a long standing controversy and I am opposed to them altogether. Just another way to screw the fighters. I actually respect Mayweather's decision to basically tell the WBA to go fuck themselves, they're the shadiest organization in professional boxing.
