By Manny V. - By now everyone has heard that Mayweather will fight Mosley on May 1st. But as Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, has always said, “a signed deal is a done deal” and this fight is not signed yet - by Mayweather that is. Mosley signed the fight last Friday.
Despite quotes from Mayweathers advisers, Leonard Ellerbe and others, that Mayweather agreed to all the terms, he has still not put pen to paper to sign the fight. Richard Schafer appeared very nervous and had lots to say on the matter…read on for more
Speaking to ESPN Richard Schafer said, "He still hasn't signed. I am so frustrated. I wanted both guys to go down to the Super Bowl in Miami to do some promotional stuff. I don't know what Floyd is waiting for. I have no clue. I have a signed contract from Shane on my desk. I have nothing from Floyd. It will only be done when Floyd signs, and that hasn't happened yet. I don't know of any deal terms that are not agreed to. I don't understand it."
Could it be that Mayweather doesn’t want to risk his undefeated record against the ever dangerous Shane Mosely? We all remember that Mayweather was supposed to rematch Oscar De La Hoya and only days before the fight was announced Mayweather retired for 18 months leaving millions on the table.
Also, Bob Arum has repeatedly said that Mayweather never intended to take on Manny Pacquiao because, according to Arum, Mayweather didn’t want a “real” fight. A fight with Shane Mosley is certainly a "real" fight.
Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey was made in short order, and Shane Mosley agreed to all the terms with Mayweather. So what’s the hold up with Mayweather signing the fight?
Schafer went on to say, "Every day, it's the next day. They [Mayweather advisors] say, 'Don't worry, it's going to come.' Well, where is it? I'm waiting for the signature before we can move on."
When asked if the fight was in trouble, Schafer simply said, “Yes”.
Judd Burstein, Mosley lawyer, reportedly said about the contract, "It was signed [by Mosley] with the assurance from Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe that everything was agreed to and there was no problem…It's either one of two things that has happened, either he's [Mayweather] rethought the wisdom of risking his undefeated record against Shane or he chooses to act like a 7-year-old. Hopefully, it's the latter and he will mature very quickly. But either of these possibilities is completely unacceptable to us. He's going to end up in a fight with Mosley. The only question is whether it will be in the ring or in court."
Lets hope its all just a matter of miscommunication and the fight will be signed. If not, Mayweather appears to have two fights in court on his hands, one against Mosley and another with Pacquiao for the defamation law suit.
