Mayweather vs. Manny: A Pound For Pound Showdown E-mail

Blog by John Krause johnkrause - By Pacquiao’s own admission, the possibility exists. Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. would truly be a boxing fan’s “dream match,” and there is ample reason to believe that the bout could reach fruition in 2009

It would be a clash of styles as safety-first Mayweather would likely be pressed from the opening bell by Pacquiao’s suffocating offense, and a selection of quotes from those with the ability to make the fight happen reveals the likelihood of the two best pound for pound fighters meeting in the squared ring.

Read on to see what Pacquiao, Freddie Roach and Bob Arum have to say about this potential Super Fight!  Click for more....

Manny Pacquiao: “Well, it’s possible. You know, it’s possible to make happen, that fight. It depends on my promoter negotiating with other promoters.”

Bruce Tampler, Top Rank’s matchmaker: “It’s not fair to say to Floyd, ‘Do you want to fight?’ when a guy’s retired. It might be a matter of what his bankroll is. I don’t know if he’s a cash guy or an investment guy. I respect Floyd enough that I don’t want to answer for him.”

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s Trainer: "Mayweather is a much more technical boxer and he's kind of more of a passive fighter. He likes to go to the ropes and lay there, and so forth. You know, Manny's thing would have to be land combinations and get out of the way, because Mayweather's got that speed. So it would be a much more difficult task than this one (De La Hoya). But, you know, since he's been off for a while, like I said, activity's very important. Manny likes to stay active. Mayweather, he just hasn't fought in a long time. I welcome the fight."

Roger Mayweather, Floyd’s Trainer: “He’s already proven what he need to prove in terms of his status as the best fighter in the world. If he decided to stay retired, it wouldn’t bother me. If he decided to say, ‘Well look, I want to try one more time,’ I mean who could complain, he’s still young. I don’t if, I don’t, I can’t tell you he’s retired for good, I can’t say that because I don’t know, I don’t know what goes through his mind. There ain’t no fighter in history to this day that has done what Floyd has done. So, most people fight they fight for a reason. They need money, but obviously he don’t need money, so he retired on his own terms.”

Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s Promoter: "I think Manny Pacquiao beats any of them. I don't know. I have to analyze it; I have to talk to Freddie. I mean, one thing I know is my limitations. And my limitations are I'm not Bruce Trampler and I'm not Freddie Roach. I listen. That's what makes me the good promoter that I am, because I know that, basically, I don't know shit when it comes to technical aspects of the fighting.

Why not Pacquiao vs. Hatton? But tonight and until the New Year it's celebration time for all the Filipinos. After that I know Ray: we'll sit down, we'll talk. That's probably the most logical fight to be made, Manny against Ricky Hatton at 140lbs, because obviously Manny would want to fight at 140 and so would Ricky. That's probably number one on the drawing board. But let the kid have a great Christmas and new year, and then we'll sit down to business.”

For his part, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has made little indication of coming out of retirement. Speculation was rampant that Floyd would be forced to return to the ring to face the winner of Cotto vs Margarito, but Floyd has continually remained silent regarding any future opponent.

Roger Mayweather has stated that Floyd can no longer make weight at 140lbs, so if the fight were to happen, it would most likely occur at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs.
