Miguel Cotto Takes Yuri Foremans Title After Nine Rounds E-mail

Miguel Cotto shone brightly once again, this time under the twinkling lights of Yankee Stadium.

The pride of Puerto Rico stopped a game Yuri Foreman in the ninth round Saturday night to win the junior middleweight title, delighting thousands of his fans in the first fight at the Bronx ballpark in more than three decades.  Official score cards had the fight 79-73 (twice), 78-74 all in favor of Cotto at the time of the stoppage.  Read on for more…

It didn't come without a little bit of controversy, or at least an interesting footnote.

Cotto started the fight strong using a forceful jab which sent the always moving Foreman to the ropes several times.  Foreman appeared hesitant as though he was not sure he belonged in the ring with Cotto. However by the fourth round he landed two good right hands to Cotto’s chin and won the round.

Foreman slipped in the seventh round and badly twisted his right knee, then slipped to the mat again later in the round. He survived to the end but could hardly move around the ring, limping on a right knee that was already covered by a black brace and getting tagged by Cotto at will.

Between rounds, Foreman's wife leaned over the railing and implored his trainer to stop the fight. Someone in Foreman's corner threw in the towel early in the seventh round, but referee Arthur Mercante Jr. angrily tossed the towel right back out. He asked Foreman if he wanted to continue, and the aspiring rabbi with the compelling back story elected to fight on.

It seemed like an odd choice for the referee to continue the fight.  As it turns out, he did not know who threw in the towel and had already made up his mind to have the fight continue.

This was not only a comeback for Cotto but also his new trainer Emmanuel Steward who showed he still has what it takes to get a fighter ready for a big fight.

At the end of the fight Cotto said, “We made the plan working with the jab and putting pressure on him.  It really worked.  I just followed instructions, Emmanuel was focused on the fight.  I had to continue to fight.  I feel sorry for his knee.  I thought the fight was stopped I saw his trainer throw the towel in the ring. I just still followed the instructions because the referee said it was someone else who threw the towel so I continued.  I worked to be the Miguel from the beginning of my career and that is what you saw.  I’m going to rest, then go after all the big names as always”

Foreman said, “First round was a little rusty, I didn’t get into my rhythm.  I was in it, he is a great fighter and I tried to fight.  I wear a brace from an old injury.  I was doing side to side movement and my knew just gave way.  I continued to fight because I’m a world champion and we need to fight.  I didn’t want to stop, when I saw the towel I thought it was over.

cotto looked really good at 154, and max kellerman can eat a fat dick for laughing at the thought of cotto fighting williams and martinez. win or lose cotto can hang with those guys, and i actually think cotto can beat both them.

Good win by Cotto, although my man MoneyMay would put him into early retirement jus like Mosley, but good win tho.

when Cotto cleans out 154, and PBF KOs Pacroid, we will be back to 4 years ago when the biggest fight that could truely be made was Cotto/Mayweather.

cotto mayweather. reality is cotto beat a nobody that had beat no one. martinez and williams would destroy them both. cotto is not ready for floyd eather. he should stay fighting nobodys and make some money and retire. stay away from manny and margarito.no big punchers.

Cotto can beat ANYONE at 154, and i don't care if he loses to PBF just having him in the same ring and putting up a great fight is enough for me, and sorry Bri but you're wrong, Cotto was beating the hell out of Margo, but we all know what Margo was packing (and remember even with that Cotto bent out of exhaustion, but Maracheato never actually dropped him), plus he was dehydrated for Manny (he couldn't come in over 147 on fight night due to some contract bullshit, thats why there wasnt much size difference), but if a rematch between him and Manny happens at 154, Manny will need a new liver just like Foreman needs it, and don't criticize Foreman for being a "nobody" cause after what he showed last night i recognize him as somebody cause we haven't seen anyone with so much balls and heart in boxing for quite some time.

Cotto did look good but Foreman really was a nobody.I highly doubt he would come close to beating Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez..I always felt Cotto was a really good welterweight champion, but not even close to great...look at his last few fights..he beat Mosley with a close decision.. was battered by Margs, got a gift against clottey who doesnt even throw alot of punches and was destroyed by pac-man..he never really beat a prime great fighter...earlier "good victories" were against Mallignaggi and Judah.........so Cotto should never be considered great but a good welterweight champion.

Jandro83****** come on man he beat a no body i dont think he can even beat spinks. foreman was a nobody protected boxer. cotto did move real well but put him in there with a class a boxer and its over. williams, martinez will both beat him real real real bad. i would love to see him vs. berto at 154 if berto would move up.and antonio was not loaded up when he boxed him if he was that match would have ended a lot sooner. that plaster turns basically to brick he would have knocked him out not made him quite.cotto cant take that kind of punishment anymore antonio would take him down a lot sooner. he did move nice with foreman but forman is a nobody never was over hyped nothin.

Overall Cotto looked good. I think he lost some speed but his timing was all good. his legs are too thick for a boxer and he's only 5'8. Ic cotto beating Chavez jr like he beat Gomez then going to war vs Angulo and taking him out with a liver punch. Some or you guys are crazy why wouldn't you want to see a fan favs fighter, a warrior, even at his downfall he's much better than many boxers outhere and would bring more action that most. This guys brings it all to the table.

c'mon guys.. this proves absolutely nothing about Cotto at 154lbs.. so he beat an overhyped, completely untested bum at 154lb.. he's SUPPOSED to look good against a guy like that.. if he didn't look good his career would have been over.

Cotto has no business whatsoever getting into the ring with Williams or Martinez OR Mayweather... Mayweather would make him look incredibly foolish, but i think Martinez and Williams might actually permanently damage his health.. brain damage etc.. he would be beaten into a soggy, bloody mess by either of those guys.. i have no doubt about that..

What's wrong with you people? First, people said that cotto can't win against Foreman and now he can't win at all with other fighters. Cotto is a great fighter with a great trainer he can be better.

all i know is that at 154 the ONLY fighter that can beat Cotto is Sergio Martinez, and MAYBE Dzinziruk, but that's about it, with Cotto's presicision and PWs poor defense, the giant will fall KOd, oh and on another note, Cotto was interviewed here when he got to the island and he said he injured his right shoulder a bit in rnd2, i saw the fight again and seems it's true cause he kinda flinched in that round and locked that right arm, he barely used it the whole fight you can notice he wasn't forcing his right hand too much.

rcb750 did i read correctly?? Pacroid "destroyed" Clottey, do you know the meaning of the word destruction? and saying Clottey doesn't throw much, well you clearly don't know anything about Clottey, 1st off Clottey had the HIGHEST connect % of any recent welter weight (which he showed in the Manny fight with the little he did), 2nd throwing 1,200 punches and only connecting 120 (which around 110 were half assed semi blocked body shots with no effect whatsoever) in 12 rounds is very VERY far from "destruction", 3rd there's a reason EVERYONE was ducking Clottey at 147 and Cotto had the balls to fight him, man go look up previous Clottey fights and you'll know what he was about, Pac/Clottey= 2 Top Rank contenders for a build up fight= Obvious Fix!!!

P.S. i want Williams next, and when he gets KOd let's hear the excuses, oh and there's rumor of a Cotto/Pac rematch at 154, it won't be the same story for Pacquiao this time around, and before i forget, there has to be a reason as to why Pacroid and Joke Coach Roach ducked Foreman.

Clottey actually fought with Cotto. He didn't fight against Pacquiao, he just seemed kind of apologetic. It was strange. Speaking as a Cotto fan, I'm not sure where this fight belongs. It wasn't Quintanaesque, but the opponent wasn't much better.

Cotto looked good, this fight was a confidence builder and it helped him as a fighter,However Martinez is probly a bit too fast and strong and there is nothing wrong with that.Cotto has made a good rep out of fighting the best and a loss or two dont fade the glory cuz he has guts and will fight anyone no questions asked at all.

I think cotto will be able to give martinez and williams a good fight. Lets not forget how qantana outboxed williams for 12 rounds for his first lost... Yes the rematch was williams who won by ko but i wouldent doubt cotto in that fight.

Martinez is a good fighter but i think cotto will matchup good aginst him to.. I believe with manny stewart by cotto"s side helps alot. Cotto has never had a true trainer as a manny stewart. And he still managed to get this far. All manny stewart can do is fix cotto"s flaws and provide a game plan to win. Just like roach n pac calabo..

Mann! Some of u guys are a joke, or just plain fuck'd up haters! Who said that Cotto is the greatest fighter who ever lived rcb750? Bcuz in my view no boxer really is.......But ya no Y (in my opinion) ill give Cotto the benafit of the doubt of becoming one of the greatest fighters over Pac & May? Bcuz every fight he had as N undefeated young prospect he's fought heavy handed, fast, top nocth veteran fighters & won, giving many of those boxers their first loss by an ass whoopin or a knockout. Cotto fights anybody they put in front of him, he doesnt pull a Mayweather stunt (only if the moneys good) bullshit, or is 1 of those fighters that finally just found the remedy after 5 losses & R pulling a Cindarella come back like Pacquiao..........But c'mon every1 knows Y Cotto lost 2 Margo, even with loaded gloves Cotto wudd've still won a split decision anyway & when it comes to Clottey & Pacquiao look who the hell trainned him for those 2 fights, plus Cotto was fighting Clottey with 1 eye since the 4th rnd.......even Mosley said that Cotto impressed him with his amatuer boxing skills, but Boxingfan101 is right, these r the same ppl who doubted Cotto most of the time since his beginnig & R the same ppl who they thought Yuri Form was gonna beat Cotto....LOL there's no logig to these ppl. doctorSpoc.

Man, you are all retarded with short memories. Do you want Cotto's face to be plowed all over again by Pacman? Do you want his family to again go though that traumatic experience of seeing their bread earner back-pedaling for dear life? C'mon, somebody show a picture of Cotto with swollen mouth and eyes after the extreme trashing by Pacman. Sorry he doesnt belong to the Pacman's league. And Gayweather? Maybe he'll retire (again) just to keep away from Pacman, the coward that he is. Please guys suggest fighters in the league of Pacman - the fighter of the decade. And make it fast - Manny has a lot of work to do in Congress. Thank you.

yeah alex santillan- Cotto vs Pacroid: Cotto drained to 145 and under contract couldn't come in over 147 on fight night, any true boxing fan that knows the sport should know what would've happened if Cotto would've been able to go in between 155-160 come fight night, little old Manny wouldn't of made it past rnd 3, even with a weakend Cotto he suffered a slightly injured rib, broken ear drum, and half of his head swollen, his head looked like the guy from the Goonies after that fight, do you imagine how it would've been with a full fledged Cotto?

Anybody who calls Foreman a nobody after that courages effort needs to check themselves. He fought like a champion and bravely till the end. He's definitely no walk over opponent and proved to be a worthy champion. By the way for those talking silly about Foreman he has to get reconstructive surgery for his knee. Fought w/ one leg against a future HOF in Cotto want more do you want?

Cotto Looked better then he has in a while, I dont know about him beating Martinez at this stage.Martinez is number three in the world, I do think it could be a great fight though, just based off the the styles of each fighter. The record is clear Cotto just beat Forman, and Martinez just beat Kelly Pavlik who is a far larger man.Still Very good at 154.

Cotto looked great vs Foreman w/ Emmanuel at his coner. That is what Cotto needed a great respected coner, also he still has his flaws but who doesn't. If Berto wants a fight he needs to get back to Mosley first. Pac needs to make his mind Mayweather or Margarito (if anyone want to see that)but Cotto vs Pac 154 (rematch), then Mosley & then Margarito. If he can accomplish these challenges. Then go ahead and step up to challenge the Winner of PW vs. SM 2 cause SM will get a win over PW on the rematch. Lets be real before Cotto enters the ring with PW or SM he needs a couple of more fight at the 154 and with Emmanuel molding him to be better. If that could happen it would be good fights for all. Cintron just need to step down if he cant man up and be real cause "q lloron" anyways thats just an opinion of mine.

Jandro83-I would have to say Cotto needs to get a revenge bawl againts Mag but at the 154 so he can clear his mind. May we all know that he is great fighter but his more about the money than anything...If he could just go down the line and fight the upcomers not the downcomers he might have more to talk about. Cause if Mosley had more heart he could of ended his win strick cause May held on to te arm to not fall...good for his stanima but Mosley exploided a good weakness on Floyd.

That Pac vs Magarito should never happen... If Magarito want to comeback he needs to work for it...

1st-Mag vs. Juan M. Marquez
2nd-Mag vs. Clottey
3rd-Mag vs. Berto
