Mikkel Kessler beats Carl Froch by decision in a thriller! E-mail
HERNING, Denmark -- Mikkel Kessler of Denmark won the WBC super middleweight title with a unanimous decision against Britain's Carl Froch on Saturday.

The judges scored the 12-round bout 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113 in Kessler's favor, despite the Dane (43-2) being bothered by a cut over his left eye in the final rounds.  Read on for more...

The bout was part of the Super Six tournament, designed to give six of the best 168-pound boxers in the world three fights each, with points awarded based upon the outcome. The four fighters with the most points advance to seeded semifinals, with a championship bout next year.

Froch (26-1) beat Jermain Taylor of the United States with a 12th-round knockout last year in his first title defense, and then overcame Andre Dirrell with a split decision in October in his first Super Six bout.

The victory was Kessler's first in the tournament after Andre Ward stunned him with a dominant victory in a unanimous technical decision last year.

Kessler and Froch now both have two points from two fights in the tournament.

Both men had been oozing with confidence in the past days but the Dane was backed by a deafening partisan crowd, which vastly outnumbered the roughly 200 British supporters.

Kessler used his jab to take control of the early rounds before Froch found his stride and started fighting more aggressively toward the end of the third. Kessler went down in the fifth, but the judges ruled it a slip.

Kessler then regained his composure and gradually wore the Briton down, bloodying Froch's nose and easily avoiding most of his punches. However, Kessler then started bleeding from the cut over his left eyebrow, and Froch tried in vain to increase the damage over the last rounds.

Saturday's bout drew some 10,000 people at Herning's congress and sports center.

Good fight! Kesslar put the pressure on in the later rounds. But you knew he was gonna take a decision anyways. Not complaining though, I thought he did enough to win it (not 117-111 though). Kesslar's cut looked bad...good thing it re-opened late in the fight. Green might try to re-open in early in their fight.

Kessler is not as good as I thought he was. Froch wins it at home.

Hey Homer, just curious about what you see as Kessler's faults. I think he's one of the most well-rounded fighters in the sport. I've been involved in boxing since the mid-80's and don't claim to be an expert but like to think that I've gained a decent amount of knowledge over the past 25 years. Perhaps you see some faults with Kessler that I missed? Not trying to challenge your opinion, just like to hear other perspectives.

i don't see much flaws in Kessler, couldnt get home in time for the fight, just saw the decision and some highlights and i could tell Kessler looked more dominant, and well i never doubted Kessler winning as Froch is the most flawed fighter of the tournament, like i say and always will his win over Taylor= FLUKE, over Dirrell= GIFT

Now let me see. I've got one guy asking me why I don't think Kessler's any good because he didn't dominate, and I've got another guy saying Kessler dominated who didn't even see the fight. How do I a respond to this? How's this, Kessler is the best fighter I've ever seen who is 1 and 1 in his last 2 fights and barely won the second fight. I'm going back to the forums.

1 and 1, the first fight being constantly headbutted and hugged wow what a fight, that was a bullshit fight and a disgracefull performance from Wards part.

Whatever you say Homer, sounds like you just want to talk out of your ass but don't have any logic to back it up. "Froch beats Kessler at home," you mean how he "beat" Dirrell at home? What a joke. I don't dislike Carl Froch but he got lucky against Taylor, should've lost to Dirrell, and just doesn't have the skill to beat someone like Kessler, Bute, Abraham, or even Andre Ward. The fact of the matter is that Kessler is fast, accurate, has decent power, and has overall sharp and disciplined skill. Saying that be isn't that good is flat out incorrect and demonstrates a limited knowledge of boxing on general.

OK, stop and listen for a minute, to me and yourself. What I said was, "He isn't as good as I thought he was", OK? That means, I thought he was better. I've seen him fight a total of 5 times, Andrade, Calzaghe, some soup can, Ward, and Froch. He didn't used to throw that wild looping useless right. I thought he barely won this fight. You have zero knowledge on MY knowledge of boxing, and when it comes to opinions, there is no right or wrong. I'm going to guess you will have the last word, (now how'd I know that)

Wait a minute Woodie, I just read your first comment. You didn't even SEE this fight and you say I'M talking out MY ass! Holy Shit! You CAN have the last word. I'm done here!

Maybe your English threw me off. Your comment, as written, seems to be directed at Kessler in general, not his performance in this fight. I'm not looking to argue, simply asking for insight to your comment. Ever heard the saying that arguing on the Internet is like competing in the special olympics? Now thanks to YouTube I saw the fight. Scored it 115-113 for Kessler and thought he clearly won. Seems like we agree one something though- Kessler doesn't look as good as he did before the Calzaghe fight. I've seen a lot of his older fights and he is definitely aged but hey, 40+ pro fights tends to do that to people. Still think Kessler can give any fighter out there a run for their money. The biggest surprise for me in this fight was that Froch is a little better than I thought.

Now Homer, it's easy to be a condescending smartass and act like a tough guy online. You know me as well as I know you, which is not at all, so there's no point in that bullshit.

Agreed, on pretty much everything, including the 115-113. I'm not sure who the condescending smartass is, I have my idea, but I think I will just let that pass. I WILL close with a condescending comment that comes from experience. I too watch fights on YouTube and Justin and wherever. You do lose a little of the feel. Nuff said.

They both impressed because they showed heart and simply because their styles meshed well. That last round was ala- gatti/ward.
Again due to styles i think abraham will have an easier day with frotch than with kess and ward will have a harder time with frotch than he did with kessler.
