MMA vs Boxing - which one needs the other more? E-mail
Blog Alert by: socalboxer socalboxer
A recent article was written on sherdog.com by Jake Rossen (see article here), commenting on the news that Golden Boy Promotions would be featuring fight cards which show both boxing matches and MMA fights.  The author, an obvious MMA fan, goes on to say that he will be taking “bathroom or snack duty” breaks during the boxing events and that boxing is a “one-dimensional sport” with a fan base of “ruddy-faced purists”.

He has obviously had one too many choke holds prevent air from getting to his brain.

If boxing fans wanted to see hitting and holding, John Ruiz would be the most popular fighter in the world.

The fact of the matter is that the world’s most popular boxing events like Pacquiao vs De La Hoya attract a larger world wide audience than anything MMA could conjure up.  Boxing does not need MMA to attract an audience.

Chuck Lidell, the most popular MMA fighter in the world recently fought, yet it gathered nearly no mainstream press and the pay-per-view numbers were dismal.  The author goes on to say that a former WWE wrestler, Brock Lesnar did a whopping “650,000” buys for UFC 81.  Great for UFC standards, but much less than the Hatton vs Mayweather event and will be no where near what De La Hoya vs Pacquiao will generate.

Simply put, the numbers don’t lie.  Boxing still puts a liverpunch on the MMA when it comes to world wide audience.

The idea of pitting the two events together on the same card could help both sports, but he seems to be living in a dream world where boxing is “dead”.

By the way, how will they set up a cage and a ring between the fights?

Nice Socal....Boxing and MMA in the same event? When MMA'ers go to the ground I would go on "Snack Duty" to grab a drink!

Great article Socal, I think all of us are with you on this issue. Look at the fights Boxing makes these days, then look at the MMA fights..... It doesn't compare, especially when all of the MMA "stars" have now become just decent contenders.

i like a good fight ,whatever the rules, but the UFC(which IS the sport of MMA, lets face it)!... is boring the tits off me lately.
i cant remember the last time i saw a decent all-in scrap.
if this boxing/mma amalgamation idea ever took off what would it mean for the lesser known fighters who already find it hard to get a fight on a big promotion???
it doesnt sound like a bird that would ever fly anyway.as i said the whole sport of MMA is practically one company and this thing would require serious financial negotiations.somebody`s pocket would suffer.... and thats the rock the whole thing would founder on!!

i like me some mma here and there! a handful of my boys are on the wagon where the somehow became convinced that boxing is dead, and that mma is where its at! so i get to watch some of the fights when THEY purchase them! i got my loot stacked for the sweet science! always have and i always will! mma will never be what boxing was, is, and is going to keep being forever! the idea of putting them together is like whatever to me, just another amuzing circus! and as for that dude that wrote that saying that boxing is a one-dimensional sport, well homie ill tell you what, i would much rather be a supporter of a "one-dimensional" sport than one that consists of 2 half naked dudes that throw 4 punches then grab each other and hold on to each other on the ground until they figure out what the fuck to do!! pinchis mensos necesitan 5 minutos por rnd para pensar como meterle un chingaso a al otro!! and like i said, i like mma, but dont go running your mouth about boxing being boring, 12, 3 minutes rnds of head to head stand up action is where its at! i cant believe this actually aggrevated me a little!
socal, thank you for enlightening us with this ignorance! you, my fellow boxing fanatic, are a well writer! paz!
