A recent
article was written on sherdog.com by Jake
Rossen (see article here), commenting on the news that Golden Boy
Promotions would be featuring fight cards which show both boxing matches and
MMA fights. The author, an obvious MMA
fan, goes on to say that he will be taking “bathroom or snack duty” breaks
during the boxing events and that boxing is a “one-dimensional sport” with a
fan base of “ruddy-faced purists”.
He has obviously
had one too many choke holds prevent air from getting to his brain.
If boxing
fans wanted to see hitting and holding, John Ruiz would be the most popular
fighter in the world.
The fact of
the matter is that the world’s most popular boxing events like Pacquiao vs De
La Hoya attract a larger world wide audience than anything MMA could conjure
up. Boxing does not need MMA to attract
an audience.
Chuck
Lidell, the most popular MMA fighter in the world recently fought, yet it
gathered nearly no mainstream press and the pay-per-view numbers were dismal. The author goes on to say that a former WWE
wrestler, Brock Lesnar did a whopping “650,000” buys for UFC 81. Great for UFC standards, but much less than
the Hatton vs Mayweather event and will be no where near what De La Hoya vs
Pacquiao will generate.
Simply put,
the numbers don’t lie. Boxing still puts
a liverpunch on the MMA when it comes to world wide audience.
The idea of
pitting the two events together on the same card could help both sports, but he
seems to be living in a dream world where boxing is “dead”.
By the way,
how will they set up a cage and a ring between the fights?
