Paul Williams vs Kermit Cintron ruled a Technical Decision to Williams after 4 rounds! E-mail

Manny V – Ringside – Paul Williams vs Kermit Cintron had one of the craziest endings to a boxing match in recent memory. I provided a round by round analysis plus spoke to Ronnie Shields just after his fighter, Kermit Cintron fell through the ropes in the middle of the fourth round and could not continue to fight.  Cintron was ahead on my score card however the offical cards gave the fight to Paul Williams.  Also provided in this video are reactions from promoter Dan Goosen and Paul Williams.  Goosen provides his reasons for not wanting to do a rematch, and Williams talks about his game plan for the fight...view the video and read on for more...

Round 1: Both fighters started off slow as they measured each other up.  Cintron landed a few good jabs and a right hand.  Paul Countered with a left hook.  Round to Cintron.
Round 2: Paul using his reach and fighting from the outside.  Not many exchanges thrown as the two feint each other.  The crowd is getting anxious for some action.  Paul attempts a big left but misses.  Both fighters falling short with the jab.  Boos ringing in the crowd for the lack of action.  Cintron lands a counter right hand with 10 seconds left.  Round to Cintron (close)

Round 3: Both fighters come out jabbing and Cintrons lands with a right to the body.  Williams and Cintron both throw big lefts and rights but each miss.  More boos from the crowed as neither fighter lands much.  Cintron lands with a big counter right but it didn’t seem to phase Williams.  Cintron using good head and foot movement to avoid Williams’ combinations.  Round to Cintron.

Round 4:  Big left hand lands for Williams followed by a counter right by Cintron.  The fighters are pulled apart after a clinch and Cintrons flies over the rope and falls out of the ring!  Williams is sent to a neutral corner.
Since 4 rounds were complete the fight went to the score cards.  The official judges recorded a technical decision win for Paul Williams (40-36 Williams, 39-37 Williams, and 40-36 Cintron)
Cintron wanted to continue the fight however under California rules either the referee or the doctor can stop the fight.  Cintron asked to continue however the doctor did not allow him to do so.
If this fight was done under the Association of Boxing Commision (ABC) rules, the fight would have been ruled a no contest because their rules state that the fight goes to the cards after four rounds have been completed.  However, this fight was done under the California State Athletic Commission rules which state the the fight only has to go three rounds for it to go to the cards.  Note that the official ruling also scored the last round, round 4, in the official tally.
There are those that say Cintron took a "dive" both literally and figuratively as the case may be.  However it was very interesting hearing the responses from each camp.  Cintron's trainer Ronnie Shields was calling for a rematch while Williams promoter stated that he didn't see anything in the action that would demand a rematch.

Since both fighters have a hard time finding opponents, they should probably just do it again.

Cintron saying he wanted to continue while lying on his face for ten minutes like a fratt house drunk is a joke. I'm not saying he wasn't hurt, but no way could he get up and continue. Too bad. I thought we were going to see a good fight. The fourth is definately worth catching.

as much as i hate Cintron, and yes he was a pussy i didnt see him get hurt on the replays, tonight was a disgrace to boxing, i have to admit Cintron was looking good and won 2 out of the first 3 rnds, and right before they fell he rocked PW badly with a right hand and PW was clearly hurt, BUT the disgrace came when the decision was announced, the fight ended mid round in rnd 4, so rnd4 wasn't over, so that mean its a FUCKING NO CONTEST, where did this new California Athletic Comission new rule come out of? that was utter bullshit, they just made that shit up at the last second, and still i had the fight 39-37 for Cintron, but still shouldn't count like i said since the bell signaling the end of rnd4 NEVER rang, so there were NOT 4 completed rnds.

Actually, Jandro, that's a good point. I also thought that 4 complete rounds had to be in the book for it to go to a decision. But rounds one and two could have went to anyone. Maybe it's if the fight goes into round 4 it goes to a decision.

Please no rematch and please never another Cintron fight!!I have seen fighters look for a way out of a fight but not literally jump thru the ropes as soon as the action heated up.Cintron has glass balls(they just taking up space and easily shattered). He didn't even hit the floor. He landed on a table a few inches below the ring.He is a real live P*ssy!!!

lol although i don't like Cintron, i still find it kinda weird that he pussied out (that is if he did in reality) i mean cmon they fell cause PW was out of it from that big right, he could've ended the fight in that round there was no point in pussying out.

anyone remember where the Guerrero/Yordan fight was?? cause if i remember correctly Guerrero was getting raped by Yordan and suffered a stupid cut mid rnd4 and he called it off before the rnd ended for a NC, if that fight was in California i call some major bullshit for this TD.

crappy california rule I had never heard of....how can 3 rounds be enough for a fight? Should have been a no contest.

Still, Cintron flopping around like a fish, that was pretty funny and not unexpected.

jandro i know for a fact your not a paul williams fan so i can see why you think cintron had a chance, but fact is williams turned up the heat and cintron said hell no, heres my way out, and jumped through the ropes and then flopped himself to the floor. fuck kermit. he has no heart, as margacheato, martinez and now williams have shown. and lets not forget angulo, angulo had the bitch running for his life in the final rounds

Cintron should take his cauliflower ear to the MMA where he could fight Mayorga. Dana White would pick it up before you could say "swan dive".

c'mon Lazie you gotta admit that huge right in rnd 4 fucked up Williams, and they fell cuase PW held on for dear life and his legs weren't beneath him, but i do agree that it was a class act, i watch the replay and i still don't see where the hell Cintron got hurt, plus you could see Cintron (i dunno how he did it) was moving nicely and connecting decently, hell PW was thinking twice before throwing, i mean 30 punches per rnd from a guy who throws atleast 100 per rnd? PW was either scared or way too respectful.

you know i've always said PW is a good fighter, but all this bullshit about being GREAT and the "Most Feared" is getting old, most feared my ass.

Yeah The most feared title should be retired!!!!The fight was boring.I wish Cintron had jumped thru the roped in first round and a light landed on both of them!!!If I was Mayweather I wouldn't waste spit on a Williams fight. Its Pacman or just see whomever wants to get it.I smell a Manny trying to set up a fight with Mosley or a Margarita. He really don't want Mayweather.

Thats right actually, Pac dont really want Floyd. Anyways Paul Williams is so overated.Floyd would slap his ass to sleep, Martinez beat his ass silly. The real great fight that I want to see made is Martinez vs. Floyd because they are both great and gifted fighters in their prime that fight in a very fast paced rythm in the same style in fact but hit in a convetional and southpaw stance. It would be sooo exiting.

yeah my boy williams hasnt looked very good, but i think if the fight wouldve continued he wouldve knocked cintron out. and yeah the most feared fighter title dont belong to him anymore. it belongs to tim bradley.

Clowns. You are a bunch of clowns on here. If you think for one second that Cintron planned this, you are a fool. He was winning the fight easily. He had just caught Williams and actually wobbled him a bit, and he's going to stop? Williams is the one who grabbed Cintron and pulled him to the ground. Why isn't anyone acknowleding what actually happened? Cintron dominated Williams and was clearly winning. The craziness started only when Williams, who was hurt, latched on to Cintron for dear life. Cintron didn't plan that. All he did was dominate the number 3 pound for pound fighter from the opening bell of round one. Give me a break. Cintron wanted to do one thing in round 4. He wanted to finish what he started. He wanted to knock Williams out and it was coming. Williams didn't hurt Cintron at all. He barely even hit him. How anyone can say Cintron was looking for way out is just ridiculous. Yes, Williams started throwing more punches but not connecting more, and he was geting hit more as well. Cintron won this fight. The result is a disgrace to boxing!
