Pavlik is Back Dec 19th, "Christmas Miracle" or Williams-itis? |
|
Blog by swodogg - I just read over at ESPN that the fight with Kelly Pavlik vs Miguel Espino is on for December 19. "Say what" you ask? As you all remember, Kelly Pavlik was set to fight the man many consider the most avoided boxer in the sport "Tall" Paul Williams. It was a much anticipated showdown to close out a strong boxing second half of the year on HBO. The fight was...
originally set in October, postponed once, then set for
Dec 5th, then ultimately canceled. The reason given was of course - Injury: Pavlik
“couldn’t make a fist” due to an infection in his knuckle. All of a sudden I read:
"We're fighting," December 19 said Cameron Dunkin, Pavlik's co-manager
told ESPN. "I have the contract here. The hand is good. He did therapy
today and he ran today. The therapy, after three sessions, the hand has
gotten much better. [The Fist] is still not closed all the way, but
it's so much better. It's really good news. He just can't wait to
fight. He really misses this.”
What happened? Did Pavlik visit a witch doctor who healed his hand
after just 3 sessions? How could a fighter cancel a fight Dec 5th come
back and say he can fight in his hometown Dec 19th for a payday? Why was Paul
Williams left hanging twice and then left scrambling for an opponent?
Am I, as a boxing fan, supposed to sit back and just say a miracle
cure occurred? I believe Pavlik may suffer from a condition all right, its called
Williams-itis! The same condition that has fallen upon many fighters
when Paul Williams name is mentioned. Its symptoms include getting the
chills, high heart rate and shortness of breath. We’ve seen it all
before….Williams is such a dangerous fighter he’s had to move up from
147, to 154 and now 160lbs. At this rate he’ll have to end up at heavyweight
to actually get a fight!
