Rafael Marquez defeates Israel Vazquez by TKO In 3 Rounds
The fourth fight between Rafael Marquez (39-5, 35 KOs) and
Israel Vazquez (44-5, 33 KOs) was not the classic everyone had hoped for.It lasted 3 rounds as Marquez stopped Vazquez
with a TKO causing severe cuts to the left eye of Vazquez before the referee
stopped the fight.
This was the first time that the two fighters fought each
other at 126 pounds and it appeared as though Marquez carried the weight much
better. He looked bigger and throwing much
harder punches than Vazquez.
Marquez started round one using the jab which he later
said was intended to open up the cuts on Vazquez fragile eyes. The plan worked perfect as the blood started
to flow from Vazquez by the start of round 2.Read on for more…
There were glimpses of their previous encounters as the
two exchanged punches in the middle of the ring in round 2. Marquez stood toe to toe even though he was
winning the fight on the outside using a jab and longer reach.
While the two traded in round 3, Marquez landed a short
right hand to the already cut eye of Vazquez which sent him to the canvas. Vazquez didn’t appear staggered by the punch
as much as it seemed like he simply couldn’t see. When he got up Marquez applied a flurry of
punches prompting the referee to stop the fight at the 1:33 second mark of the
third round.
As for Vazquez he said he wanted to continue fighting and
perhaps do a 5th fight. However the severity of his cuts shows that he should seriously consider
retirement.
Marquez on the other hand is now a force to be reckoned
with in the featherweight division. After
the fight he said Vic Darchinyan could be next however many want to see him
with Juan Manuel Lopez or Yoriorkis Gamboa.
You could see the half healed scar tissue under the new wounds. It was horrible. The boxing bodies should save a fighter who will not save himself. If he could take off for a year or two then comeback maybe, but he would be older, slower and his timing off.He should consider retiring.
I like Vazquez but his eye cuts definitely weren't healed and never should have fought. I don't know what his team was thinking of other than a pay day. His type cuts take at least a year to heal properly. I hope he retires or takes the adequate time off to heal.
