The last
picture I saw of Lewis, he had gained about 35-40 pounds and his hair was half
grey. Even Ring Magazine poked fun at him for his largeness in a sweater/vest
combo. And Bowe - well let me put it this way, Bowe is a man to be pitied at
this point. He's a tragedy looking for a place to happen. And if that happens,
I hope the boxing commissioners who licensed him are properly identified and
prosecuted for negligent homicide.
Punch Drunk?
I have seen
productions that have shown interviews with Bowe from 15 years ago; and he was
a relatively articulate man; compared with more recent interviews, where you
would be lucky to understand two out of every five words that come out of his
mouth without subtitles. This is a man who needs to be protected from himself.
I know all of these guys should be able to earn a living, if they can
intelligently choose to fight. But that ability has to be seriously questioned
with Riddick.
Whats left to prove?
With
Lennox - I have only one more question - what do you have
left to prove? He beat basically every serious challenger in the heavyweight
division, including Vitali, Tua, Holyfield, Grant, Briggs, Golota, Rahman,
Tyson and Botha. That is a who's-who of the division at the time! With no
serious training to speak of in the past few years, and Vitali fresh off a
training camp and resounding victory over the concensus #2 heavyweight
contender in the world, should Lennox really be thinking this is possible?
The Ageless Wonder
I know that
Bernard Hopkins is 43 years old and is still doing very well - but there is a
reason they are calling him the Ageless Wonder - it is a freaking miracle that
he can still do the thing he's doing. My dad is only seven years older than
Bernard and he already has age spots. Sit back and wait for your call to the
Hall,
Lennox, you know it could be coming this
year, right? I just beg that this is not true for either case. The AP story is
listed below.
FRANKFURT,
Germany (AP) — Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe will fight for the
first time in three years on the undercard of the IBF title fight between
Wladimir Klitschko and Hasim Rahman. Bowe’s opponent for the Dec. 13 fight is
yet to be determined, promoters said Thursday. Bowe, 41, retired in 1996 and
came back in 2004.
He had
another fight in 2005 and has not fought since. Bowe’s only loss in 43 fights
was against Evander Holyfield, who at 46, is preparing to fight Nikolai Valuev
next month for the WBA title. Reports in German newspapers on Thursday said
Lennox Lewis, 42, was preparing for a comeback fight against Vitali Klitschko,
Wladimir’s older brother, and the WBC champion. Bild newspaper said the fight
could take place in the middle of next year. Here's another little bitbit from
the AP for those interested in the amateurs: USOC takes USA Boxing off
