With
Richardson's guidance and
wisdom, Shane was able to turn back the clock, and prove that there was no
power shortage during the tornado that was in the ring with him at The Staples
Center. It is now apparent that Shane Mosley belongs in the top 10 P4P
rankings, and is now ruler of the welterweight division. For Antonio Margarito,
this night proved to be the worse of his career. Aside from the illegal hand
wrapping controversy and loosing out on more than twice the money he would of
got for fighting Paul Williams, Margarito will now be considered by many to be
"overrated". Which is just, if you look at his losses. All of his
defeats were to opponents with decent boxing skills. Paul Williams and Daniel
Santos were able to outbox the plotting Margarito, Rodney Jones (Poor man's
Paul Williams) did the same early in Tony's career, and Miguel Cotto was doing
that until he ran out of gas. Now Shane Mosley introduced that with persistence
you can even slug smartly with Antonio. Margarito now finds himself with only
one option, instead of the many he had before the Mosley fight, and may never
get back to the spot he so briefly held as the kingpin of the welterweight
division.
With that
being said, let us not take away from the legendary performance of
"Sugar" Shane Mosley. He knocked out a man who many of the experts
thought to be "unknockoutable". Mosley now sits atop the welterweight
rankings with many different options and lucrative paydays, and to think, many
of us thought it might be the last time we would see Shane Mosley in his
glorious career. The debatable question now remains, What's next for Shane
Mosley? Here are his top 5 options.
List Of Possible
Opponents
1) Shane
Mosley vs Floyd Mayweather: This fight would be 10 years in the making. It was
Mosley who supposedly "ducked" Mayweather at lightweight for money
reasons. Then it was Floyd who supposedly "ducked" Mosley after
P.B.F's victory over Oscar De La Hoya for the same reasons. The fight between
the two provides many great story lines. Floyd coming out of retirement in
attempt to regain his title of the best P4P fighter in the game and Mosley
proving that he was better than Floyd all along. Also, can you imagine if Jack
Mosley trained Shane and Flyod Sr trained Mayweather? That would be one hell of
a 24/7 series.
2) Manny
Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley: This fight might make the most sense. Manny destroyed
Oscar, and Shane beat the "Golden Boy" twice. Mosley and Pac-man both
have speed and power, and would also be a P4P showdown that guarantees
fireworks. If Pacquaio can beat Hatton, Mosley might be next.
3) Shane
Mosley vs Paul Williams: The last two men to beat Margarito battle for
welterweight supremacy. Williams has a small claim to say Mosley got his sloppy
seconds. Mosley can say he was able to do what Williams couldn't, beat Margo at
his own game. Mosley has gone on record saying he wouldn't mind facing the
"most feared" man in boxing. If Williams were to dominate Winky
Wright, it could provide Mosley a chance to clear his two losses to Wright.
4) Shane
Mosley vs Miguel Cotto 2: In their first fight Cotto escaped with a narrow
victory. The fight was highly entertaining and warrants a rematch. If Cotto is
able to right the wrong against Margarito in June, the chances of this fight
will double.
5) Shane
Mosley vs Andre Berto: The ultimate boxing cliché, the cagy veteran vs the
climbing hungry prospect. This title unification would put Shane against an
opponent who mirrors his younger self. Remember this fight almost happened when
Margarito almost left Mosley at the fight alter in December.
*Jabs*
(More Possibilities) Rematch with Margarito, even though there has been no cry
for one yet by team Margarito. The other is Shane Mosley vs Josh Clottey. Top
Rank is already planning on a tournament that involves Mosley, Clottey,
Margarito, and Cotto. Winners would face each other in December for a big
showdown.
The fate of
Shane Mosley somewhat comes down to us as fight fans. My question to the site,
is who would you like to see Mosley fight next? -BH-
