Standing 8 Boxing News and Notes - Pacquiao Faces JC Chavez? E-mail
By Manny V. - 1. Antonio Margarito’s return will not happen on the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey undercard as previously speculated because he will not be reinstated in time for the fight.  However its possible that he fights on May 8th in a Mexico PPV  event. At  that point if everything goes well, there have been preliminary plans for an eventual showdown in November with none other than the “Mexicutioner” Manny Pacquiao.

2. Manny Pacquiao has gone head to head with many Mexican fighters, and can now say he was face to face with “El Gran Campeon Mexicano” Julio Cesar Chavez himself….read on for more…

The two greats met in Mexico over the weekend at the Latin Fury/Pinoy Power card.  It could just be the Mexican in me, but I think Julio Cesar Chavez would have stopped Pacquiao in a barn burner.
3. Winky Wright could be back in action with promotional company Top Rank on one of their Fox shows and possibly the Cotto-Foreman show in New York. Bob Arum reportedly said if Kelly Pavlik beats Sergio Martinez then Wright could face Pavlik by the end of  2010.  Fight fans don’t hold your breath on that one.  Its my guess that Pavlik doesn’t get by Martinez; but we will just have to wait and see.

4. Every few months there seems to be a new  “most feared man in boxing“  This time its…Tim Bradley.  He certainly is dressed up with a title belt and no one to dance with - as of yet.  Edwin Valero was interested but hasn’t pulled the trigger. Nate Campbell wants a rematch with Bradley but fight fans have not been clamoring for it.  Perhaps if Campbell fought the way Valero did, with a gash on his forehead, he would have a stronger case.  Maybe Bradley can move up and fight Andre Berto or collect more belts in his division. Until then he is the new “El Cuy Cuy” de Boxeo.

5. Paulie Malignaggi has been talking steroids again.  This time its about Amir Khan. Paulie told a radio show that he didn’t have any proof but that “it has crossed” his mind since Khan comes from the  same camp as James Toney who was caught using steroids.  Malignaggi needs to stick to his day job as a boxer, because his detective work isn't exactly Sherlock Holmes material.

6. Nonito Donaire continues to put on impressive performances and could be cracking the top ten pound for pound lists soon.  Its only a matter of time before we see him in there with either Fernando Montiel,  Jorge Arce or a rematch with Vic Darchinyan.  It will be interesting  to see which fight happens first.  I am personally pulling to see him against Montiel.

7. With the new year and great fights coming up, Liverpuncher.com has been  working hard behind the scenes to upgrade the entire site.  You will see enhancements to the Fantasy League, user profiles, a new forum, new video section, and more.  We will begin the migration later this week!

8. And last on the Standing 8  is a quote from Floyd “Money” Mayweather when he recently spoke  about  his upcoming  fight  with  Shane Mosley.  “A lot of people need to realize in 1999 I was trying to make a fight with Shane Mosley when he was still undefeated. Now, five losses later, I got the bad end of the stick.  We’re a lot older now. I don’t know what he’s got left. He looked tremendous against Margarito but if I knock him out then it’s ‘He was supposed to knock him out.’ If I don’t then ‘He didn’t knock out Mosley.’ But I don’t care about the negative things people say. I’ll box. I’ll be smart. I’ll be me. I’ll break him down."

I agree, I dont think he is ready yet. Hes gonna need another trainer to pull out his full potential. The Man has not showed us a defence to speak of. Th thing we seen in the Demarko fight is guts and hes is tough, but you better be smart if you want to fight Tim, cuz he is one of the best fighters in the world. Top ten for sure.

yeah valero needs lots of work just gettin by on natural ability but no fundementals ...95% of fighters now lack the basics the last fundemental fighter i can think of is maybe b-hop hands high ,slips punches, offers head movement , proper stance and keeps proper distance ...also marquez

The 1988 version of JC Chavez would have raped Pacquiao! Although Pacquiao would have probably lead in the cards during the first 6-7 rounds because of his speed, Chavez would have found a way to break him down eventually!

I dont think so Sik, Duran beats Chavez @ lightweight but Chavez @ 140 was a Robot and I think cleans him up. You have to remember Chavez won more fights and had a higher ko%, he is over all a more consistent fighter. Chavez 106-6-86 Duran 104-16-69.

yeah but like 25+ of chavez oponents were tomatoe cans i have to say duran would win chavez was never the boxer duran was duran was a agresive fighter but many people forget how good he could box cause of it chavez was just a agresive fighter could never really switch gears and box if needed duran also later in twilight of career took title ...duran would have never loss to a delahoya chavez great but as all time def ranked below duran

got to remember duran has win over sugar ray leonard ..didnt chavez lose to leonard ..and as for the no mas leonard admits he waited till duran got lazy and fat with money to do rematch made sure was not fighting a 100% duran

Sik there are very few tomato cans in mexico, the american medea said shit like that all the time, because they dont know who they are doesnt mean they are not tough. Mexican society raises gangsters that are so hard, my cousins friend got killed in tj just because he looked like some one else. Its dirt poor and guys fight for you just maddoging them, they have almost no ameture program and most of those kids either sell drugs or pull hits for cash.Chavez was 13 years old when he punched a 18 year old pro boxer and knocked him out and that is how he was discovered. This guy fought and beat Julios brother and was making jokes when he offendid Julio and got knocked out. Chavez could do it all, watch the fight with Meldric Taylor he could slip punches, mastered distance, incredable endurance, and he is rated by many experts as #6 geatest fighter of all time including The Boxer Writers Assn. who has Duran #12 And Bert Sugar has him #5 and has Duran #15, look @ 135 Duran was a monster but @ 140 Chavez of 1988 would fight 12 rounds with one of the best fighters in the world and not even get brused. Just watch his fight with Edwin Rosario, Chavez would fight guys and they were never the same. All fighters look like shit when they are older, just look at Durans loss to Hector Camacho. Chavez beat the hell out of him. And Sik Chavez NEVER fought Leonard.

lol okay got me on the vs leonard ends up was not real fight was charity exhibition ..but i still have to say duran wins ..at what weight was the first duran vs leonard? i beleive WW i doubt chavez would have beat that duran....and duran was way better boxer he had footwork especialy in early years you cant ever say chavez had footwork head movement ok but footwork no..and have to disagree most polls always have duran higher than chavez espn had duran like #6 and chavez like #25

floyd is not talking poor me he is just stating facts. he tried to fight mosley twice when mosley was in his prime and mosley said no twice. those are just facts. no respect for pavlic anymore. pw gets sick of his b.s. and all of a sudden infection is gone over night. now he wont give pw a 50/50 split like he has some kind of marketing power. no way he fights winkey or pw. margarito will get his chance to prove himself against manny. but manny really needs to start fighting fighters in the upswing and needs to start fighting top compatition available. floyd mosley berto somebody coming off win tune up fights dont count wont say pw since no welt is gona fight that guy. wonder if margaritos first fight back will b against manny or if he will fight someone prior to that. because floyd manny will never happen and if mosley beats floyd his next fight has to be against floyd due to rematch clause and i dont think manny will fight berto next and abrum love all top rank fights. keeping all money inhouse. abrum is making a killing right now

why on earth would pavlik be scared to fight winkey? i dont like pavlik hes been a little b**ch since hopkins schooled him but i would have to imagine he would be the favorite against a old winkey who has never been known for power

Look Sik, you saying Chavez couldnt do it all is silly, he was the best fighter in the world for 14 years! He fought 5-6 times a year for 14 years without a loss. The only reason he ever lost was age, his first loss came when he was 34 years old. If your getting your info off google, bing,or yahoo then it is not very accurate at all. I own a very large collection of boxing books and my facts come from there. Chavez at his weight p4p was far stronger and more skilled then Duran. Duran lost in a second round ko to Hearns, and Chavez out of 116 pro fights has been on the canvis 2 times, hes been tkod but never kod.Duran was great at light but was never the same in the higher weights. Chavez peaked at 140, but at 140 he was almost impossible to beat. You need to wach the Meldric taylor fight on dvd in its entirety and not on fussy youtube. This guy used to bounce and box but realised he didnt have to cuz he was so strong he walked most of his opponents down. The fight with Duran and Camacho was not a charity fight, it was real and Hector thumped him.Yeah they were both old.Though

I can't really coment on Duran cus i only know what media wants to show me about him. about chavez, to comment on how he was so confident in his power.. i member, He was so sure of his power that he walked right in front of the 'Mexican assasin' Roger Mayweather and almost ko'ed him with that looping punch. That's guts plus lilcrazy and confidence i guess.

saying duran got kod by hearns no big discredit hearns could really bang if hearns fought chavez prob would have done the same to him..and duran after loss still came back and took title when everybody wrote him off ..also chavez was way down on score cards before got controversial stopage with two seconds if meldrick was winning almost every round imagine what leonard would have done...duran gave a prime young fit leonard first loss dont think chavez would have beat prime leonard

No offence Sik, you know the sport very well but not even knowing who he fought or when he fought its kinda too raw of a knowledge base to say anything good or bad about him, you sound like your knowledge is very media based and if you would have wached the fight with Meldric then you would know that Meldric was beaten to a pulp and that is why Rich Steele stopped the fight. I watched his career from the beginning and he was the best 140 pounder i have seen in my life. Just think about any boxer going 90-0.

yeah yeah only been able to follow boxing for 20yrs when i was 10 and my moms finaly got cable did not get to see any of the greats live ..know what sucks one of my first live fights i seen on cable was when tyson got ko'd ....i got a few dvds and always watch old fights on classic..never said chavez wasnt great just that duran was better and feel would win if they fought at there prime and dont think chavez could beat leonard im sure there are plenty of people who agree with me as with you ..tell you what we get the time machine from napolian dynamite and make the fight happen ..shoot got a few things i still wanna change in past lol

Its all good Sik, there are things I would love to change to, aside from the times I said things to hurt somones feelings when i shouldnt have, to fighting all the time for no reason, but to me the biggest struggle for a man is to find where his place in life is. These two men found it in the Ring.

yeah people talk about how many people die in boxing but fail to see how many lives it saves..example how many lives might have tyson taken if he didnt find boxing he was way to being career criminal and i have no doubt he would have committed murder had he not found boxing same as arron pryor and so many others

hey bench know whats funny i have argued that chavez vs meldrick fight with my friends so many times i say was good stopage they say it wasnt but like you said chavez had crushing power had he landed a clean shot on a defenceless meldrick doubt he would be alive shoot he cant even speak straight now as it is
23 February, 2010

JoeLuis said: _

I've too argued that stoppage with myself at times i see the fight through taylor's eyes and say, it was an injustice cus the dude did got up, but at other times i look at the fight in the referee's perspective and eventhough taylor was winning the fight in rounds because of his speed you can't argue that chavez's punches had taken his toll on taylor's body and on ref's perspective his life was at risk when he couldnt respond. Now the butte Vs andrade 1 non-stoppage... The ref just Effed up!

Bench 355, in your strength training to get up to 355 bench, were you using pictures of Floyd as inspiration to get real pissed so you could pump more? Did he have an affair with your mom or something and kick her to the curb? You don't seem to like him much
23 February, 2010

Jmc561 said: _

ohhhhh the meldrick-jc debates.

My 2 cents in a nut shell, purpose of ref stopping a fight is to prevent one from taking too much punishment. But with 2 seconds left and Chavez all the way across the ring in the neutral corner, how much damage could he have done in the remaining time left?

Youll learn in a while and in the meantime you can keep smoking weed with your friends getting older sleeping on your moms couch masterbaiting in your bathroom thinking about the girl that thinks you are nothing. Its ok your mom will keep paying the bills while you cant find a job cuz you are underqualified ignorant and youll end up alone.
