Standing 8 Boxng News and Notes: Arreola takes on Adamek and much more...
By Manny V. - 1. Pacquiao vs. Clottey is on track to sell 45,000 tickets according to a quote Bob Arum told ESPN. However the question is, will it earn more revenue than Mayweather vs. Mosley? My guess is not even close. When Mayweather starts to sell his fight on HBO’s 24/7 the tickets will go through the roof. This is important because Mayweather has said that he will not accept a 50-50 split with Pacquiao in the future if his fight outsells Pacquiao-Clottey.
2. If you can’t make it to Dallas, the tickets for Chris Arreola vs. Tomasz Adamek go on sale tomorrow on ticketmaster. The fight takes place April 24th in Ontario CA. My early pick in this fight is Adamek . I like Arreola, he brings lots of excitement but I have to question his dedication to the sport. I was pulling for him to beat Klitschko but he was simply out classed despite putting on a gutsy performance. Since then, Arreola gained close to twenty five pounds and blamed it on the restaurant down the street. On the other hand, Adamek seems to be on a roll after his win against Andrew Golata. Either way, it should be a great fight. Read on for more...
3. Andre Ward will be the in studio host this Friday on ESPN so be sure to tune in. Its my personal feeling that after Pacquiao, Mosley and Mayweather are gone from the scene, Ward can be one of the fighters to carry the mantel. Ward faces Allen Green on the same date as Arreola vs. Adamek (April 24th).
4. Speaking of Allen Green he says he has been studying the Super 6 fighters intently. “I just don’t see anyone who can beat me. I’ve watched all the fighters over and over. I’ve studied all of them and I know I can beat any of them,” Green said. If you haven’t studied any of Green‘s fights, check out the spectacular knockout he scored over Jaidon Codrington in 18 seconds:
5. Episode 4 of Fight Camp 360 starts this Saturday on Showtime. The 30-minute episode features an emotional interview with Jermain Taylor as he discusses his withdrawal from the tournament. Viewers will join Arthur Abraham as he departs Germany for the United States in preparation for his Group Stage 2 bout against Andre Dirrell. Along the way, Abraham, the former middleweight titleholder, misplaces his cherished world championship belt and the hunt is on.
6. The American interest in the Klitschko brothers has gone from bad to worse. Wladamir Klitschko vs. Eddie Chambers taking place on March 20 does not have a home on US TV but will be on http://www.klitschko.com for $14.95. I‘ve checked out the site, and lets say it could use a few upgrades. Wladimir said, "I am excited about the possibilities of Web broadcasting. I enjoy working on the computer and I am very interested in new technologies. I like the idea that we are pioneers with this new technology in a very important market. I am sure this technology will be the wave of the future." Lets hope by then the Klitschko’s are long gone - even from the internet.
7. The upgraded version of Liverpuncher.com is almost DONE! We were hoping to finish it this week but it may take a few more days. We will get it in time before Pacquiao vs. Clottey. We are all anxious to get it published and get the fantasy league going again.
8. And last on The Standing 8 is a quote from Jeff Mayweather, uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr., who spoke to the Examiner about a recent trip to visit young Floyd in training camp:
“I had a chance to see him recently. He looks great already. He looks phenomenal. Believe me it aint going to be nothing like nobody thinks. All of this talk about Shane beating Margarito, who cares? Margarito is a walking punching bag and Mayweather is almost impossible to hit. You are looking at two totally different situations.
“Basically he was just being himself and working out but he was looking very, very sharp and his instinct was there. He looked like he was ready to fight now. He still has a whole lot of work ahead of him but just what I watched it’s kind of like one of those situations where even though he is my nephew I am still amazed when I watch him."
In this photo taken Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, Sadaf Rahimi, an Afghan woman boxer, practices at a boxing club in Kabul, Afghanistan. As one of the first women to ever box in the Olympics, besides going after a medal in the boxing ring at the London Olympics, Sadaf Rahimi will be taking a few punches in the fight for equal rights for Afghan women.
