Standing 8 - Maidana, Dirrell and Guzman Wrap Up! |
|
|
By Sal V
1. A pretty good set of fights on both Showtime and HBO this weekend. Andre Dirrell fought in his home state where Arthur Abraham looked like a fish out of water. His cut above the eye called for two doctors take a look in the middle of the round. For one, the referee should have waited for a true lull in the action. Abraham seemed to have been buzzed just before. Secondly, the two doctors took way too much time playing cutman in the corner. Just look at the cut and determine if he can continue.
2. There was one instance where Andre Dirrell took a flush right hand by Abraham and hit the canvas. It was ruled a slip but should have been ruled a knockdown. The punch seemed to have caused the knockdown rather than any tangled feet.
3. Seeing Andre get hit while he was down was reminiscent of Roy Jones DQ some
years back. Dirrell was obviously hurt and could no way continue.
Very disappointing to watch any fight end like this.
4. So Abraham made the comment that Dirrell was "Acting." If that’s
the case, I’d give him the academy award. He looked out cold in my
opinion.
5. Ali Funeka gets robbed for a second time, this time by the scales.
Joan Guzman vs Ali Funeka is a complete disgrace when one fighter shows
up 9lbs heavier than the other. It was an unfair advantage putting Ali
in a tough position. Take the fight and make a payday or take a risk
of being KO’d by a bigger guy. Boxing needs tougher penalties for
overweight fighters.
6. Marcos el Chino Maidana continues his impressive KO (28 wins, 27 via KO) record with his
spectacular body shot over Victor Cayo this weekend on BAD. No wonder trainer Miguel Diaz was
so concerned about the high cup protector of Cayo during the pre-fight instructions. They had that bodyshot
planned all along.
7. Marcos Maidana, what more can we say about the guy. He came up the
hard way fighting all over the world and nothing was ever given to him. He’s avoided like the
plague, he’s young and hits like a mule. B.A.D was made for guys like
Maidana. HBO should push hard for an Amir Khan vs. Maidana showdown in the
near future.
8. Quote from this weekends fights comes from Bob Papa:
"Victor Cayo nickname is ‘Marmalade’ because he’s sweet and smooth….hopefully he doesn't turn into Jello vs Maidana!"
See ya next time on the Standing 8! Keep them liverpunches flyin’!
