Standing 8 - New and Notes; Mayweather-Mosley, and more... E-mail
By Manny V.  1.  Juan Manuel Lopez knockout  over Steven Luevano was a solid win, however not  nearly as impressive  as Gamboa’s knockout  over Rodger Mtgwa.  Gamboa looked part Shane Mosley and part Mike Tyson the way he took care of  business in less than two  rounds.   When the  two meet, Gamboa will most likely be favored to win.

2  Andre Ward’s next opponent has officially been changed to Allen Green.  It was first  announced that Allen Green would  duel  it out  with Sakio Bika to determine who would fight Ward as a replacement  for Jermain  Taylor’s  decision to withdraw  from the Super Six tournament.  If Ward were to beat Green and move  on to  win the tournament,  lets  hope fight fans give him  the credit  he deserves.  Read on for more...

3. Brian Viloria gave the boxing  world a scare when  he collapsed in  the dressing room after suffering his third loss this weekend.  All tests came back negative on Viloria, who was knocked out by Colombia's Carlos Tamara in a light flyweight title fight.  Lets hope we have no more serious accidents this year in the ring.

4. Speaking  of accidents, Jorge “El  Hyena” Barrios found  himself  in no laughing matter when he crashed a car killing a pregnant woman in the processes.   Police said Barrios, 33, ran a red light and will be charged with murder.

5. No official word yet about a Mosley v Mayweather fight happening this year.   The last  thing Richard Schaffer said was that he would be working on it “24/7”.  Its been more than a week…perhaps Mayweather is waiting for the economy to recover in 2012 before he accepts the fight.

6. Amir Khan has been looking for an  opponent recently and has decided to target the fading and naturally smaller lightweight champion Juan  Manuel Marquez.  Apparently beating Marco Antonio Barrera wasn’t enough to satisfy Kahn’s appetite for fading Mexican greats. "It is my mission to fight men like Marquez and that would be my dream fight in America," Khan said to the Daily Star.  While Marquez isn’t exactly a shot fighter, I think Marcos Maidana earned his title shot at Khan fair and square after knocking out Victor Ortiz.   Perhaps its Maidana’s record  of 27 wins and  26 Kos that is stalling the fight.

7.  After a 2 ½ year layoff former champion  Eric Morales is planning on making a comeback in March of this year as a  welterweight.  His opponent will be the unheralded former lightweight titleholder Jose Alfaro.  The last time we saw Morales was in a losing yet competitive effort to David Diaz.  Who knows, if Morales  looks good  against Alfaro,  Amir Khan may target Morales later this year to complete the trifecta of fading  Mexican greats.

8. And last on the standing 8 is a quote from Bob Arum on when Yuriorkis Gamboa will  fight Juan Manuel Lopez “I want to hear you guys ask me that question [about when they’ll fight] over and over and over. Because then I know they’re taking care of their business and we’re doing our jobs. They’re terrific young fighters and terrific kids, but this fight is going to be huge one day. If I just threw them in there now, yeah, you’d love it and it would be a great fight, but it wouldn’t do the kind of business it’s going to do a while from now. Believe me when I tell you, down the road a fight between these two guys is going to be huge. You watch.”

Juan Manuel Marquez a fading Mexican fighter?! PROVE IT! cuz he lost to one of if not the best fighter in the world, at a higher weight class! i can't believe that someone who throws himself at such a challenge gets taken for a "fading fighter". not cool! bring it on Khan-do it in the States-do it in Mexico-get taken to school-get ur clock cleaned-and let us have the 1st Mexican to win a title in 4 different weight classes-AND LET IT BE THE GREAT JUAN MANUEL "DYNAMITA" MARQUEZ! he'll send that ass back to prospect status before the media retires Marquez! smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif

Fuck glass chin Khan, now he's crapping his pants cause of Maidana's record? Maidana would KO him in 30 secs lol, Khan is overrated and has a glass chin, hell if u watch the Barrera fight, the few solid shots he landed rocked Khan, in rnd 2 or 3 if im not mistaken he caught Khan hard with a few secs left and Khan was holding for his life then the bell rang, not only that, it sould've been stopped in rnd 2 a NC cause of the cut, but they let it go till rnd4 to steal away a decision, damn smart asses, if he's got balls i dare him to fight JMM at 135, i really wanna see that pussy's ass get whooped by JMM lol.

AT 135 MARQUEZ STOPS KHAN IN LATE ROUNDS...BUT AT 140 I WOULD HAVE TO SAY KHAN WOULD PROB GET THE TKO WIN ..MARQUEZ HAS SHOWED SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN AT 135 AND HE SHOWED HIS BODY CAN NOT HANDLE THE EXTRA WEIGHT WAS NEVER A VERY FAST GUY AND AT 140 MUCH SLOWER AND NOT USE TO BEING THE AGRESSOR ASS SHOWED IN THE MAYWEATHER FIGHT ALSO KHAN IS JUST AS FAST AS MAYWEATHER THINK HITS HARDER AND IS TALLER THAN MAYWEATHER SO MARQUEZ WILL HAVE A BIG MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB ..ITS ASHAME GOLDENBOY TRYING TO THROW HIM UNDER THE BUS AGAIN LIKE THEY DID WITH MAYWEATHER THEY KNEW AS MOST BOXING EXPERTS KNEW HE STOOD NO CHANCE AT ALL... THERE RUMORS SAYING KHAN WILL FIGHT ZAB AFTER MARQUEZ THAT WOULD BE A GREAT FIGHT AT 140

As disappointing Marquez was in his last fight with a bigger man, I can expect more of the same with Khan. Another snoozefest.
