Standing 8 - New and Notes; Mayweather-Mosley, and more... |

By Manny V. 1. Juan Manuel Lopez knockout over Steven Luevano was a solid win, however not nearly as impressive as Gamboa’s knockout over Rodger Mtgwa. Gamboa looked part Shane Mosley and part Mike Tyson the way he took care of business in less than two rounds. When the two meet, Gamboa will most likely be favored to win.
2 Andre Ward’s next opponent has officially been changed to Allen Green. It was first announced that Allen Green would duel it out with Sakio Bika to determine who would fight Ward as a replacement for Jermain Taylor’s decision to withdraw from the Super Six tournament. If Ward were to beat Green and move on to win the tournament, lets hope fight fans give him the credit he deserves. Read on for more...
3. Brian Viloria gave the boxing world a scare when he collapsed in the dressing room after suffering his third loss this weekend. All tests came back negative on Viloria, who was knocked out by Colombia's Carlos Tamara in a light flyweight title fight. Lets hope we have no more serious accidents this year in the ring.
4. Speaking of accidents, Jorge “El Hyena” Barrios found himself in no laughing matter when he crashed a car killing a pregnant woman in the processes. Police said Barrios, 33, ran a red light and will be charged with murder.
5. No official word yet about a Mosley v Mayweather fight happening this year. The last thing Richard Schaffer said was that he would be working on it “24/7”. Its been more than a week…perhaps Mayweather is waiting for the economy to recover in 2012 before he accepts the fight.
6. Amir Khan has been looking for an opponent recently and has decided to target the fading and naturally smaller lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Apparently beating Marco Antonio Barrera wasn’t enough to satisfy Kahn’s appetite for fading Mexican greats. "It is my mission to fight men like Marquez and that would be my dream fight in America," Khan said to the Daily Star. While Marquez isn’t exactly a shot fighter, I think Marcos Maidana earned his title shot at Khan fair and square after knocking out Victor Ortiz. Perhaps its Maidana’s record of 27 wins and 26 Kos that is stalling the fight.
7. After a 2 ½ year layoff former champion Eric Morales is planning on making a comeback in March of this year as a welterweight. His opponent will be the unheralded former lightweight titleholder Jose Alfaro. The last time we saw Morales was in a losing yet competitive effort to David Diaz. Who knows, if Morales looks good against Alfaro, Amir Khan may target Morales later this year to complete the trifecta of fading Mexican greats.
8. And last on the standing 8 is a quote from Bob Arum on when Yuriorkis Gamboa will fight Juan Manuel Lopez “I want to hear you guys ask me that question [about when they’ll fight] over and over and over. Because then I know they’re taking care of their business and we’re doing our jobs. They’re terrific young fighters and terrific kids, but this fight is going to be huge one day. If I just threw them in there now, yeah, you’d love it and it would be a great fight, but it wouldn’t do the kind of business it’s going to do a while from now. Believe me when I tell you, down the road a fight between these two guys is going to be huge. You watch.”
