slander is when you say something you know to be false about someone and it cost them in terms of money, reputation etc... the defenses is to slander a) what you are saying is true b) you don't state it as fact, but you state it as your honest opinion (i.e. if they have you on tape saying the opposite thing you might be screwed)..
