This Day in Boxing History: December 3 E-mail

Blog by John Krause johnkrause - On December 3, 1981, Joe Frazier fought his final fight against Floyd Cummings. The bout ended in a majority draw, and Frazier left boxing forever

The fight against Cummings was Frazier’s first fight in over five years; Frazier had previously lost a 5th round TKO stoppage against George Foreman during their 1976 rematch.

Frazier began his career weighing 203 pounds in August, 1965. He finished his career 16 years later, weighing 229 pounds, and had amassed a career record of 32 victories with 27 KOs, 4 defeats, and 1 draw.

Floyd Cummings recently made headlines with his lawsuit against ESPN Classic, in which he is seeking $50 million in damages from the rebroadcast of his fight with Frazier. Cummings claims that when the bout was again made public, he was “singled out for and identified to public notice and attention, which is utterly obnoxious to me, and I have been caused to suffer great mental pain.”:

Cummings says he “Lived a quiet and private life, free from the prying curiosity which accompanies either fame or notoriety, withdrawn from the public gaze, free from the insatiable interests of the great mass of people.”

Cummings, by the way, currently lives a quiet life in prison where he is serving a life sentence for armed robbery.

Joe Frazier turns 65 years old next month.
