Weekly Boxing Update - Cotto Sparring Partner leaves, Holyfield and Tyson are Back!
Time for the Weekly Boxing Update at Liverpuncher.com: The Standing 8!
1. Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto is heating up and the choice of
sparring partners is in question. Cottos sparring partner “el Gato”
Figueroa reportedly said he was mimicking “Pacquiao movements” in sparring but has
no clue why he got sent home. Lets be real, there is only one guy that can mimic the tsunami that is Manny Pacquiao, and that is Pacquiao himself. Watching some of the youtube video of Figueroa vs Randall
Bailey and you will know why Click for More...
he got sent packing.
2. The super 6 tournament is ON this weekend. Everyone see the reality series on Showtime? 6 promoters sitting in a conference room devising this grand tournament scheme. It looked like something from the GodFather. You have to hand it to the bunch, they are giving us a reason to be excited for the Super
Middleweight Division. Action kicks off this weekend, get your Liverpuncher.com Fantasy Predictions in!
3. There’re back! Tyson vs. Holyfield. Well not in the ring at the MGM but the two will be seen on Oprah’s show this Friday. Tyson said this Monday he has never really apologized sincerely for the “Bite Fight” with Holyfield. He will get his chance this Friday on the Oprah show were the two will be together once again. Oprah will referee.
4. Speaking of mainstream TV, Floyd Mayweather has been seen everywhere as of late. Fox News Channel, CBS news, even on the floor of Wall Street. You have to hand it to the guy, he knows how to capitalize on his win with the mainstream media. These talk shows, mostly reserved for politicians and business people, may not know much about boxing but they do have one thing in common with Mayweather and that’s talking Money.
5. Everyone see the major upset this weekend?? 130lb world champ from Venezuela Jorge Linares was dropped in 73 seconds by virtually unknown challenger Juan Carlos Salgado of Mexico City. Salgado made the long flight to Linares adopted hometown in Japan to take on the champ. If Linares wants his belt back, Salgado should get some payback….Tell team Linares to get the belt back, this time they will have to come inside his house, the Lions Den: Mexico City.
6. Hopkins says he and Roy Jones will be fighting on the same day, just not each other. Hopkins will be "bringing it back" to Philly vs Enrique Ornelas of Mexico, who by the way is Librado Andrade’s brother.
7. Juanma Lopez and Israel Vazquez made appearances this weekend in the ring. Unfortunately for them both were a bit tougher than expected. Juanma survived the last two rounds brawling instead of boxing with Rogers Mtagwa over 12 rounds while Vazquez came back from a rusty start with his win. Are these two ready to take on each other? Right now, they just really need to take some time off and rest.
8. Last on Liverpuncher.com The Standing 8 is a quote from none other than Mexican Jose Luis Castillo providing a warning via an interview with Gareth Davies of the Daily Telegraph. Castillo as you know is sparring with Manny Pacquiao and had this warning:
“I could not see the left hand…its very fast and strong, I think that will be a big problem for Cotto.”
See ya next time on the Standing 8 at Liverpuncher.com!
LOL make Linares take it to a bull ring in Mexico City! i'd love to see that.
Didn't golden boy just sign him? Dayum they must be nervous right now. But then again, remember when Amir Kahn got started the same way? I"m sure linares will be back.
