What is next for the welterweight division? |
|
by Jeff Bollinger
Cotto vs Margarito Saturday night was the best welterweight fight to come down the pike since Leonard vs Hearns I.
What it means to the welterweight division? A lot. What it means to boxing? A lot more. Antonio Margarito's performance was piss in your pants scary. If he wasn't holding the title, I think he'd have a harder time getting a fight than Sponge Bob has of getting his drivers license. But Antonio has the belt, so they will come.
What makes perfect sense is a rematch with Paul Williams. As we
all know too well though is that perfect sense isn't found anywhere
near the boxing vocabulary.
The money fight for Margarito is for De La Hoya to fight him in
his farewell fight in December. Or better yet, for Mayweather to come
out of retirement for a shootin match for all the marbles.
Most likely though, if Mayweather saw the fight Saturday, Carmen
Basilio is more likely to come out of retirement than Floyd. If De La
Hoya money couldn't get Pretty Boy to put the gloves back on than
getting his trailer park caught in the path of the Tijuana Tornado most
likely aint gonna happen.
The welterweight division is getting ready to be cleaned up like a
dirty floor. But before that happens, I wish Oscar would man up in his
last fight and give a guy who truly deserves it, a chance to make some
real money. Antonio Margarito.
