We need
SEVEN guys who won't flinch.
All we
really need is about five fighters who already have established names - Pac,
Marquez, Pavlik, Lopez and Williams would do - they're all young enough to have
a future ahead of them, who refuse to pay the sanctioning fees for these
ridiculous belts and starve the alphabet soup to death as they keep making
money putting on good fights and the sanctioning bodies get nothing.
Then we
need one major state commission (
New
Jersey would do) to get serious about punishing
improper officiating, steroids and instant replay. Just one commissioner to
show some balls and not back down could challenge the whole thing and make a
huge difference.
AND ONE
MORE THING, (barry you're not going to like this) we NEED Oscar DelaHoya to
give more back to the boxing community that made him a gazillionaire, and pay
to run a prime time boxing show on major network TV out of his own pocket.
(Think Obama's infomercial) It probably wouldn't end up costing him more than
six or seven million, but put on a good show, and he could set the anchor for
the return of the Wide World of Sports. There's a cash cow you could invest in.
With the popularity of MMA peeking interest in the fight world again, sneaking
in with a good show (Lopez vs. Vazquez and Arreola vs. Haye would be awesome)
could steal the thunder created by the new creation and re-establish boxing as
a staple of sports entertainment.
I believe
in this.
