What's it going to take to clean up boxing? E-mail

Blog by perkthepuncher perkthepuncher - Everyone who follows the sport knows that there are problems in boxing. The premier names have image issues from steroid allegations, loaded hand wraps, not making weight, $60 PPVs and more. The organizers hire incompetent referees, judges and ignore a fix in instant replay. There are no fewer than four champions in each of the approximately 20 divisions.

What's it going to take to fix it? A Coup….read on.

We need SEVEN guys who won't flinch.

All we really need is about five fighters who already have established names - Pac, Marquez, Pavlik, Lopez and Williams would do - they're all young enough to have a future ahead of them, who refuse to pay the sanctioning fees for these ridiculous belts and starve the alphabet soup to death as they keep making money putting on good fights and the sanctioning bodies get nothing.

Then we need one major state commission ( New Jersey would do) to get serious about punishing improper officiating, steroids and instant replay. Just one commissioner to show some balls and not back down could challenge the whole thing and make a huge difference.

AND ONE MORE THING, (barry you're not going to like this) we NEED Oscar DelaHoya to give more back to the boxing community that made him a gazillionaire, and pay to run a prime time boxing show on major network TV out of his own pocket. (Think Obama's infomercial) It probably wouldn't end up costing him more than six or seven million, but put on a good show, and he could set the anchor for the return of the Wide World of Sports. There's a cash cow you could invest in. With the popularity of MMA peeking interest in the fight world again, sneaking in with a good show (Lopez vs. Vazquez and Arreola vs. Haye would be awesome) could steal the thunder created by the new creation and re-establish boxing as a staple of sports entertainment.

I believe in this.

Make better undercards is another one.

The undercards are starting to be Marketing for Golden Boy Productions rather than acutal fights!

Maybe Delahoya can front some money to HBO or Showtime to get at least satellite and cable network fights rather than 54.99 PPV (I have dish and the HD is this amount). I've bought two this year and it was hard justifying the money for the fights that were sanctioned.

PPV fees are outrageous with crappy undercards.. HBO,espn, azteca america and showtime have had better fights than ppv this year. last weeks fights i decided not to pay $60 for such mismatch not justifiable matches indeed.
Some other things to point out are:
1. better judges or let the ref see a replay - where do they find these people giving cinton a draw. no way!

2. Less belts - Belts are not as apealing. Having a belt doesnt always makes you the best fighter outhere nowadays.

3. Fix the Olympics scoring as well. - that really sucks!

4.Overall tuneup for the major boxing councils - Get people that care about the sport not just to sploit boxers. I mean the freaking manager had to point out someone other's mistakes speaking about margo's SIGNED handwraps. Antohere thing We have Strong US athletes going to other sports because of all pollitics in our sport. Ex: we have a freaking football linebacker that decides to make a whole lot money playing football instead of becoming a heavyweight champ. Seriously this sport is hard.

5. Give the boxers HMO at least or some retirement plan. they can't make money if they spend it on bills. (Glad that Diaz came out of induced comma.) We also got the Chicanito hernandez's out there that can't pay for their bills(good shit for all that suppoerd him on this weekend fundraiser) . (I felt so f@#ed up when i encountered "bobby chacon" selling pictures outside the staples, I couldnt understand the guy that's how f' ed up he was.) (if you dont know who he is google chacon vs limon)

i agree with what Joe Luis says, hell boxers are being exploited right now, look at the Cotto/Arum thing, Cotto looses once and now Arumis indirectly throwing him aside and favoring Margacheato and i dont know why cause Margacheato doesnt sell as well as Cotto does, man i hope he leaves Top Rank a goes to GBP.
