Two undefeated fighters entered the ring, and two
undefeated fighters left the ring as Abner Mares (20-0-1, 13 KOs) vs Yhonny Perez (20-0-1, 14 KOs) was ruled a
majority draw. Two judges had the fight
scored 114-114 and one judge had it 115-113 for Mares. Perez retained his IBF 118 pound title.
The fight was a war from the beginning with Mares showing
quick combination punching in the early rounds and scoring often. However in typical Yhonny Perez fashion he
kept coming forward pressing the fight and started to land hard body shots
which made Mares get on his bicycle by the fourth round. Read on for more…
The middle rounds were all Yhonny Perez and and it seemed
as though Mares wouldn’t see the final bell. Perez was landing strong effective punches while Mares moved without
landing much. The crowed began to
slightly boo Mares as he moved away from the aggressive Perez.
However by the final rounds Mares stood his ground and landed
the classic 1-2 (jab, right hand) combination on Perez often. The two combatants traded shots from close
range however the quicker Mares seemed to get the better of it. Mares closed the rounds strong and stood toe
to toe with Perez to earn the draw.
The fight truly could have gone either way. Perez seemed to be bigger, stronger, and a
harder puncher than Mares. However Mares
showed very good technique thorough out the fight. Lets see it again!
