Liverpuncher.com
tossed a few questions to US Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward after his recent
win….
Liverpuncher.com: We saw you use the Southpaw stance a lot tonight....was it
planned?
Ward: It was working. I didn’t even
train for that. He wasn’t ready for it.
I wanted
to wow myself tonight....I'm an instinct fighter. When I turned southpaw stance and I hit him
with a straight left, he couldn’t do anything about it. And it worked for me. Maybe a quarter of the fight or more, I was
southpaw and I didn’t plan on that
Liverpuncher.com: Jeff Lacy had trouble with Williams…did you watch any tapes?
Ward: We got the Lacy fight and primarily
that is the fight I watched. He was
younger then and Williams did some nice things….Not to take anything away from
Jeff Lacy, we are just different fighters. I have my style.
Liverpuncher.com: How
big a step up is this?
Ward: I think it was a big step
up.....it was one of those fights people would want to tune in and shows we
belong in the super middleweight division
Liverpuncher.com: People
mention about stepping up in your career….
Ward: I would like to fight at least 2-3
fights. I got a baby in the way, but it
shouldn’t be a problem getting more fights. There are a lot of things that factor in. People can maneuver a fighter to the top to
fight for a regional belt ….but I want to earn it. I would love be world champ, pay my dues and
respect the sport and then get out when its time.
Liverpuncher.com: Roy Jones has said you remind him of a young Roy Jones. Do you try to emulate Roy Jones style?
Ward: From a business aspect he did
things his way. He went against the
grain. From a physical aspect he was
amazing, he so called did everything technically wrong but he got away with it
in the ring. I love that. I def emulated myself from Roy but as I got
older, learned to develop into Andre
Ward.
