Bernard Hopkins rallies to draw against Jean Pascal E-mail

QUEBEC CITY -- Bernard Hopkins missed a chance to become the oldest boxer to hold a major world title, fighting to a majority draw with Canadian Jean Pascal on Saturday night.

The 45-year-old Hopkins (51-5-2) rallied after being knocked down in the first and third rounds.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Amir Khan successfully defended his WBA 140-pound title with a narrow unanimous decision over Marcos Maidana on Saturday night, surviving the stiffest test of his career with guts and skill.

Khan (24-1, 17 KOs) knocked down Maidana with 10 seconds left in the first round of the British champion's Las Vegas debut with a vicious left hand to the body, and the fight never really slowed down.

The free-swinging Maidana seemed to be close to stopping Khan during a brilliant 10th round, but Khan absorbed every shot to his head and responded with a strong 11th.

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Victor Ortiz and Lamont Peterson fought to a majority draw Saturday night, with Peterson coming back from two knockdowns to keep alive his 140-pound title aspirations.

Also, Joan Guzman remained unbeaten, stopping journeyman Jason Davis in the second round on the undercard of Amir Khan’s WBA 140-pound title defense against Marcos Maidana at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
 
 
Agbeko and Mares Win In Bantamweight Tournament E-mail

TACOMA, Washington (AP)—Ghana’s Joseph Agbeko was a unanimous winner and Mexico’s Abner Mares won a split decision Saturday in the semifinals of the Bantamweight Tournament.

Agbeko (28-2) beat Yonnhy Perez (20-2-1) and Mares (21-0-1) edged Vic Darchinyan (35-3-1) in the event, which featured four of the world’s top 118-pound fighters.

Agbeko and Mares will now meet in the championship round next spring.

Nonito Donaire stopped Wladimir Sidorenko at 1:48 in the fourth round Saturday, earning a bantamweight title shot with a dominant performance.

Donaire (25-1, 17 KOs), a Filipino-American making his bantamweight debut, dominated Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KOs) from the beginning, putting the Ukrainian down three times with overwhelming power shots.

In the co-feature between two Mexican opponents, Humberto Soto defeated Urbano Antillon by unanimous decision in a thrilling give-and-take fight to retain his WBC lightweight title.  Read on for more..

Oakland, CA - Andre SOG Ward (23-0, 13KO's) was able to secure a victory over the former Contender 3 champion Saiko "the Scorpion" Bika (28-5,19KO's) but not without a fight on his hands this Saturday night.  With a little over 4100 fans in attendance, Ward was possibly in the toughest fight of his career.  Scores were 118-110, 118-110, 120-108.  The lopsided scorecards however are skewed by a tough and rumble showing by the Cameroon fighter.

The fight itself was sloppy at times.  Lots of holding and hitting with Bika trying to turn it into a  brawl rather than a chess match.  Ward did his best to out muscle Bika on the inside while landing the sharper punches from the outside.  “I’m glad to get the victory but I want ...Click for More...
 
Juan Manuel Marquez Stops Katsidis In A War! E-mail

Juan Manuel Marquez successfully defended his WBA and WBO lightweight titles, stopping Michael Katsidis at 2:14 of the ninth round Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

In the ninth round, Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KOs) landed 36 punches to nine for Katsidis (27-3, 22 KOs). Referee Kenny Bayless halted the bout after Katsidis was hurt by several combinations.

After eight rounds, the three judges had the 37-year-old Marquez leading, 78-74, 76-75, 77-74.

Katsidis knocked down Marquez with a left hook in the third, but Marquez rallied to take the lead before finishing off Katsidis in the ninth.
